    2001 e46 330xi m54 engine oil leak/ excessive oil consumption and smell

Hey pros, I have a 2001 BMW 330xi. Over the last month or two my car has been burning oil toward the rear of the engine (near the firewall) and dripping down onto the headers making the car and surroundign area very noticeably smell of burnt oil. I've had to put 2 quarts of oil in since it started to keep the levels above minimum. There is also visible damp oil on and around the headers on the back left of the motor. My question is; What seal could it be that's in the back of the engine? there's no leakage anywhere else. Thanks!

    Probably a valve cover gasket.
PM me for info on properly working AC and CEL for your S54 or M54 swapped car.

+2, I would also check the function of the CCV too.

Sounds like a valve cover gasket for sure. Don't forget the 15 grommets! I agree on checking the function of the CCV and also the oil filter housing gasket. The valve cover gasket is a very common leaking spot but it doesn't normally leak a lot of oil. Usually just enough to notice the smell and wetness on the headers. So it sounds like it could also be something else causing the excessive oil loss. You can pick up UV dye at your local autoparts store which can help pinpoint any other leaks.
