Just purchased a 2006 x5 4.8is.
Ive noticed that sometimes when im stopped i see blue/white smoke coming out from mufflers. When i start the car in the morning is clean no smoke at all... No check engine, no lights on.
Can anyone tell me what it can be???
Thanks
PCV valve ,valve stem seals or piston rings.
Sounds like your valve stem seals are on there way out though, pretty common on the N62 motors if that's what you happen to have in your car and if PCV valve was not damaged.
I have the same problem with my 04 X5 4.4i, the repair is anywhere from 3k-6k. I just replace a a quart of Oil with 2x CD2 when I change the oil and use 1 level thicker grade seems to help.
I have an 06 4.4, just bought it last weekend. The PPI I had done on it said there was intermittent white smoke, spoke to the inspector who said it was not likely valve stem seals but more likely fueling and check after servicing. Anyway after all tests and due diligence I bought it and the car crapped still itself on the way home - alternator so as this was not picked up I wouldnt be surprised if he was wrong on this too. It is in at the shop now getting the alternator replaced and I will have the smoking checked too whilst still covered by warranty. I traded my perfectly reliable SS on this thing, already regretting it, ps the pano sunroof rear tilt issue exists in this car too! caveat emptor......

update, bmw specialist today confirmed the worst, after sitting idling for about 5mins plumes of blue smoke mostly left bank - valve stem seals. He has specialist equipment to do the work without removing the heads so it is much cheaper @ approx 2.5 - 3k for both banks... he said normally 4-5k without this gear as heads need to come off. Anyway I rang the dealer that sold me the car this arvo to give him some more good news on the warranty, he wasn't happy.
Hi there Group...... the same happens to my x5, (4.4lts, 2000 year) the blue smoke its comming from the left bank, and also you can hear or feel from the oil filler cap a small pressure suction, you can hear that if you pull you with care. Thanks in advance!
Change the oil to the 10w60 oil used in the mcars this helps then give it awhile the cats can have residual oil on them that needs to be burned off and if you going to to smog test it will fail the tap test, that's where they raise the rpms quickly then release the gas pedal and smoke comes out the tail pipes, because the engine is good and hit from driving To get around that change to the 10w60 them drive for a few weeks, then park the car overnight near the smog shop, started it drive over get smog. Why park it near the shop, because they don't care if the car is warmed up in the case of the e70, no coolant gauge, e53 has coolant gauge so it may need to be up to half , but that won't take long but the oil is still thick and cold, hence no smoke on tap test, worked on my customers car perfectly it was an e70
