Here's what I just posted in my build thread regarding the diff...

Pulled the diff out, gears look fine, no broken teeth. Fluid is a little bit silvery, but nothing crazy. When I'm rotating it, I can tell there is a spot on the pinion where it gets significantly harder to turn. Maybe a high spot? Not really sure. There isn't any obvious visible wear on the pinion.

Any ideas? I need to drive this car 350mi back home either today or tomorrow, and I haven't had any luck finding a diff locally (rochester ny)

Here is the vid of the noise it's making:

Wasn't there a guy on this subforum that builds diffs? Maybe somebody has a phone number for him?

    Yeah all bolts are there.

Put a new diff in and no more clunking on shifts. I guess that old diff had a lot of backlash before it failed.

New diff is a 3.15. Although I believe it's out of an M3 so it's the weaker one?

I kinda want a 3.23. Would be perfect for 1/4 mi in my car. 3.15 would probably feel very similar though.

    I have a 4 clutch 60% 3.23 I built. But I kinda want a 3.15.

Here is the one I built

Interested in trading that diff for my two? The 3.38 has poly bushings.

Can't do that unfortunately, I have alot into this diff. I completely rebuilt it, every bolt, every seal, bearing and race. + all new clutches (4) and dog plates.

But 3.23 should be easy to find.

I tried a second gear launch, once, in my lil e30. Didn't end well, maybe a 3.8 sec 60-ft haha. Not to say it can't be done, but I wasn't going to slip the clutch that much, to get it to work.

Well now that I have the launch control issues all fixed up, I should be able to get right back down to 2.0 and lower.
Problem I found was the launch control MPH was too high, I was basically hitting a 5000 rpm rev limiter when the tires were hooking.

Sometimes technology gets so frustrating. Glad you got her figured out. Looking forward to seeing how the M&H radials do. But then again, with the Federal RS-R's being about $100 less per tire, I may just cheap out if I go R-comp.

The M&H tires are no street tire. Very soft.

For the drag standings 2014, is just the top 5 will be posted? Before the end of the summer I'm going to run my stock auto m3 and use the results as my start to improvement.

No worries, that sounds like a sweet diff.

I saw that, but since I already have the 3.15, I think I'll stick with it for a little while.

On a drag racing related topic... I just moved back to CT, which is bad news for racing. There are three nice tracks (Island dragway, Englishtown, and Lebanon), but they are all about 2 hours away. Which is pretty far, especially when my insurance towing is only 60mi.

Anybody interested in doing a night at Lebanon Valley? They have $20 test and tune on Wed nights. I'm thinking of going sometime in the next couple weeks.

We are actually in the New England forum. You can be an honorary member but your states of NY and CT are actually in another forum. You might get more takers there unless maybe there are some southern MA people here.

I feel like half of New England is closer to Lebanon than the NE Dragway...

And I think CT should be included in the NE section, because it actually IS in NE.

Saturday June 7 is looking like good weather for the test and tune open drag racing at NED. Hopefully the honorary New England forum members from CT will come up. I was not in charge of defining New England for Bimmerforums.

Should be a good time. Maybe they will prep the track for the high powered supras. Last year one of them ran 13.5 @ 142.

Damn! Another event I'll have to miss!

All I need to do is just switch over my vanos, change the chain tensioners, change headlights and get registered! So close.... yet so far!

I'm going to trade my SPA t3 for for kojohns SPA t4 so both of us gets what we want!

    LOL!

Don't think I'll make it out, either... 200mi each way is a good bit of driving. Looking forward to seeing how you guys do, though.
