3rd Test and Tune in a row rained out tonight. And it looks like Friday's will be the same.

Looks like I will remain NE drag race champion for 2 weeks running, with a poor performance. Not only in highest trap, but lowest ET as well.

I best get out there again and lower that ET.

Import Wars tomorrow @ New England Dragway ; )

Test and tune will be throughout the day, racing is $30 and watching will be $25 IIRC. Looks like it will be awesome weather.

If anyone wants to head down, Pbonsalb and I will be heading up in the morning. Hopefully we will be parking by the fence next to the bleachers.

No BMWs broke on the strip. Butters ran his turbo E36 328i, I ran my turbo E36 M3, a couple of what I think were E90 335i ran, an E28 M5 ran, a centrifugal supercharged E90 M3 ran, and there may have been one or two more. It was very crowded due to the car show so runs were limited. I should have taken notes on times and speeds but did not. The turbo E36 ran in the 12s and 13s between 119 and 127, the 335i ran in the 13s at about 104-106, the E28 M5 spun badly off the line and hit about 93 with a poor ET if I remember correctly, and the SC E90 M3 did very well for street tires at 12.2 and 116 so I think he must have been using launch control and may have been using traction control.

Interesting numbers on that SC E90 M3. Pretty quick ET, pretty slow trap.

Pbonsalb, what were you using for tires and what's your power level? Nice time, by the way.

I assume the SC E90M3 was limited by traction. This is a really bad track for street tires. I have spun at 100 mph and gone sideways. Also, it was so crowded people got only 1 or 2 runs so he might have improved with practice.

I was running M&H drag radials in 235/60/15. 18 psi boost, which is probably at least 525 rwhp on my car. I got only 2 runs and was just getting used to the tires. With practice, I could go quicker and maybe even faster. I have run quicker before at the same boost and at less boost, but this was my fastest trap so far. 12.02 at 127.44. A nice time would be well into the 11s. But I am starting out gradually, having fused two clutches, broken two driveshafts and broken one axle stub last year. All those parts have been strengthened, but I still have to develop confidence in them to launch harder. My motor may loosen up a bit and that could help also. It had only 900 miles on it. I'd like to hit 11.6 and 130 mph this year.

At the track now. So far my best is 12.288 @ 121.7 with a 2.1 60'. Started drizzling, but looks like it has passed and we can get back on soon.

That is very fast for a centrifugal. You definitely have some power. Back in 2007, M3Jasper ran 12.33 at 120.04 with his 511 rwhp centrifugal. He later ran an 11.9 but with a lower trap. The 11s are more of a traction issue than a power issue. You have to do everything right.

    I cracked 11 big time

Nobody was there tonight so I got 7 runs in just a couple hours. I have my last two slips pictured below. 2nd to last run was 11.9 at 123, I bogged the launch.

I pulled out the passenger seat for the last run and did 11.6 at 120. Tiny bit faster launch, I spun tires through 1st and 2nd this time. 4th gear was running out before I made it to the line. Tried shifting into 5th, and I missed (crap synchros). Hence the low trap speed. 123 is the top of 4th (was redlining right at the finish during previous runs). I think I would have trapped 125 if I made the shift. I imagine the ET would be a good bit lower, too...

With the sub 2.0 60' times, you are doing things right. The 11.6 is very good. That is my goal for this year -- to make an 11.6. The 123 mph is very fast -- as fast as most 500 rwhp turbo cars. I doubt you will do much better on the trap because it takes time to shift and your power band drops back and you are probably just where you should be for your power. But keep trying since you have proved everyone wrong so far.

Is your 3000 lb weight with or without you in the car? Obviously power to weight ratio is a factor. I was just over 3500 on the track scales, with me in the car (no weight reduction, A/C, 3/4 tank gas, 200 lbs of me).

3000 is a rough estimate without me in the car and a full tank. I haven't weighed it on track scales. This is going based off a truck scale last year, but lots of things have changed.

Right now, the car is no A/C, full interior in front of seats, no interior behind. No spare tire.

Yeah, topping 123 will tough with my current gears/tires. But like I said, on that last run, I was a good bit in front of the line when I tried shifting for 5th. It would have to be at least 124 or 125. BTW, that is at 7200rpm. I think 3.23 gears would allow me to trap 125 a little easier since I wouldn't have to shift, even if the torque multiplication brings me down a little.

Did you try launching from 2nd ?
You did very well. Seems as if you have a real nice track to go to.
Very jealous. Last time we went @ night I couldn't get the tires to hook @ 7 psi, nevermind 20.

No I didn't try launching from 2nd... I also feel like I didn't even put the clutch to work in 1st.

Track is kind of a hidden gem. Very nice surface, but it's in the middle of nowhere, and doesn't seem like a lot of people know about it. There were only 20-30 cars there last night.

It was about 65F with no sun if that helps at all. Traction in 1st and 2nd was a little bit of an issue. I'm sure it would be fine on a 80 or 90 degree sunny day.

Your runs are a perfect example of how much track prep comes into play. Awesome job.

Could be the diff was about to break anyway. The carrier cap bolts have loosened on some of these diffs as the diffs enter their second decade of life. Eventually a bolt will fall out and travel around and usually either get broken up or break something. The carrier cap mounting tabs will likely break once a bolt or two are loose or gone.
