    question.

so I see the intake manifold is picking up the cool charged air from the fmic. But I only see one charge pipe on the passenger side and that the same side the turbo is.. where is the pipe connecting to the inlet of the intercooler coming from the turbo?. I see a bit in the pic on tye drivers side but I'm confused. Is it looped somewhere

It crosses under my fan and to the turbo. I have more pictures of it on my instagram if you have an account. Username is Sean Zenitram, if not I'll try to get a photo posted here soon.

Hey, thanks man. Let me know when ever you get your m30 FI, always love to see other people's projects.

I've been pretty busy with the car the last month or so. I moved in with some friends to a house that has a three car garage, so plenty of room for activities. I took advantage of the time and space I now have and FINALLY decided to tackle the oil pan gasket that was been leaking since I bought the car in 2012.

I apologize for the low quality of some of the photos.

I never have removed a motor before, so I figured I would remove the front end just to make it a bit more easier for myself.

    Bottom end

It was about this point where I realized that while the motor was out, I should try to clean up some of the wires and brackets I wasn't using.

Took about 40 minutes to get the old gasket off.

Cleaned all the dirt off the tranny.

It's been about two year since I last painted the valve cover. The paint was looking a bit tired, so I tried to use some of the wrinkle paint I've seen so many people use.

Going back in.... This was by far the most difficult part. Getting the linkage and drive shaft all aligned while three of my buddies help push it back into place.

All the wires I lengthened were done with solder, heat shrink, then I sealed the ended with high temp electrical tape just to be sure. At one point the whole body harness had to be cut and then reassembled color by color in order for it to fit behind the blower motor.

I inspected the blower motor pretty well when I took it out, I've always been paranoid about it catching the car on fire. Two members have lost there e34s in the last month from this reason (suspected anyway). Everything look in great shape which I couldn't be happier about. Also changed in the lower recommended fuse. I also ended up making new ground post under the fender for all of the lighting and as well as bringing the three relays that sat on the fender back into the fuse box. I had three vacant spots for relays, so it worked out perfect.

I also put in a 71 degree C thermostat while the coolant was drained.

Also got my hands on a M5 shift surround and I should have a nice Renown wheel coming in tomorrow.

Right now working on bleeding the coolant and clutch.

Also I can't decide if I want to get rid of that garbage filter and buy some piping in order to get it further away from the exhaust manifold now, or I just wait until this goes in.

It's a Holset 8 blade HX40, it's a friend's and he is willing to sell it to me. I've been sort of debating whether the hx35 or hx40 would be better for months and I still really haven't done the research yet. A 12-16 cm hx50 was suggested from a friend who is no stranger to BMWs and is pretty well versed in the matter. However, I just think an hx50 is way to large for what I want.

Also forgot to mention that I ended up buying a crank hub cover from Bimmerheads. Kind of pricey, but kind of a custom piece So I understand. I'm really happy with the quality of it as well.

It's great seeing another clean M30 in an e34. Mine was that clean till last weak I swear the cooling system pisses me off.

Any way details on the holset? I was looking for one. Is the outlet of that turbo a 3" it's hard for me to find a t4 turbo with a 3" outlet for the charged air

Thank you, lots of time was put into in the last month. I've always seemed to having trouble with the cooling system, but after bleeding it yesterday I drove it all day today with no high temps. Let me tell you, that Volvo fan seriously pushes air. It brings my temp gauge down a notch when it turns on.

As for the Holset, I don't have really any idea. It's a friend's turbo that I'm may or not buy. I've been doing research as of late determining and learning all the different dimensions of turbo chargers and how they play a part in the power range, ect. I was hoping someone on bf.com could enlighten me on some info, but I think the hx40 would be a nice safe bet, seeing as I can get one for $300 or so dollars.

Sorry off topic. But I still can't seem to get my car to bleed right. I dropped by 84 month thermostat and it's making funny noises now. Like its stuck. I hate when preventive maintenance goes bad.

But I was looking at the Hx40-hx45 as a first turbo to learn from. Pretty cheap and with the right parts i can make great power. But first need to get chassis ready for turbo first

I think the cooling system is one of my least favorite things about this car, maintenance wise. Somedays I'll have a great day, not problems what so ever. Then the next some type of chaos ensues. To be fair though, today I didn't tighten down the bleeder screw all the way before driving.... My fault.

But yes, the Holset I think is a great turbo. From what I've read they are extremely durable turbos (the hx35 more than the hx40), and is capable of good power for less money.

Yes, but I've read that the internals hold up better to abuse or something rather.

I was going to say that make great power for the $$, I must have clicked submit before finsihing my sentence. Stupid taptalk.

Maybe just a tad on the passenger side, but only because removing the air intake bracket bent itna tad. I didn't shape any different from how it was though, if that's what you're asking.

So I got my Renown wheel in the mail earlier this week, could not be more happy with this thing. High quality product for sure. I opted for the 130R with the M stitching. All their wheels use a MOMO adapter, the e34 specifically uses the 2008 hub.

I actually found this company through Instagram, still a smaller company but again, amazing product.

I was trying to get my M50 variable TPS installed yesterday and get acceleration enrichment and closed loop idle working with the MS, but something isn't working out. I have a few more test to run, but it might be somewhere within the MS board that's causing me trouble.

Anyway, MercyFlush over at R3vlimited has been VERY kind in trying to help me get this figured out, the following I've taken out of some private messages with his permission and posting here. I thought it could benefit more than just me by sharing this very useful information and some test you can do with the TPS and the 55 pin board to ensure everything is working correctly.

    M50 TPS

    M50 Pin 1: 5v (black) = M30 Pin 3 (Brown/Black) = Harness Pin 53 = Edge connector 5v (DIYPNP)

    M50 Pin 2: Signal (brown) = M30 Pin 1 (Brown/Blue) = Harness Pin 52 = Edge connector TPS (DIYPNP)

    M50 Pin 3: Ground (yellow) = M30 Pin 2 (Brown/Orange) = Harness Pin 19 = Edge connector GND (DIYPNP)

Maybe grab your multimeter and put it in ohms mode and confirm the following:

    1. Meter in Ohms and measure across M50 TPS Pins 1 and 3 and record the value. For the sake of explanation I'll assume the result was 4.5 Ohms (Yours is probably different).

    2. Fist off don't touch the throttle. Meter in Ohms and measure across M50 Pins 1 and 2 and record the value. Measure across M50 Pins 2 and 3 and record the value. These two values should equal the result from part 1, or close to it. Lets say, 4.4 Ohm(1&2) and 0.1 Ohm (2&3) = 4.5 Ohms (Test 1)

    3. Meter in ohms measure across M50 Pins 2 and 3 and while doing this actuate the throttle (twist with your hand or have someone help etc.) The reading should go either from ~0 ohms to 65% of the initial reading (or a similar span of ohms depending on the adjustment of the tps the starting point will be higher of lower ohms).

    4. Hook your wiring all back up and check the ohms on the harness connector with your meter in Ohms over the pins 19 and 52. When you actuate the pedal you should be getting similar values to Step 3. Do the same for Harness Pins 19 and 53, this should read the same or similar value to step 1.

If you do the above and yet the tps still reads wrong in the megasquirt then I urge you to check the wiring from the harness connector inside the megasquirt DIYPNP to the daughter board (the big blue board you construct when you get the DIYPNP). Make SURE you have removed the 1K resistor that's grounding the tps signal from the old style switch otherwise it's not going to work right!

For what it's worth my values are 203 to 619 counts with the tps calibration. Using the values from Tests we can deduce what the counts *SHOULD* be using some maths. But in reality it'll not be exactly this. But should ballpark you for diagnostics.

    Using M50 Pins:

VOutput = ((Resistance of Pin 2 to Pin 3 (Signal)) / (Resistance Total (Pin 1 to Pin 3))) * VInput

Using the values I selected above of 0.1 Ohms for Pins 2 to 3 and 4.5 Ohms for pins 1 to 3 and input of 5v
    VOutput = (0.1 Ohms / 4.5 Ohms) * 5v = 0.0222 Ohms * 5v = 0.111v For 0% throttle

Now if you pressed the pedal to the floor, resistance of Pin 2 to 3 would go up to, idk, somewhere near 3.5 Ohms lets say.
    VOutput = (3.5 Ohms / 4.5 Ohms) * 5v = 3.888v for 100% throttle

Now to calculate the counts we simply divide the full range of voltage (5v) by the total number of counts, in this case 1024. so 5v/1024 gives us 0.00488v per Count

    therefore:
    0% throttle counts = 0.111v / 0.00488v/Count = 23 Counts (rounded up)
    100% throttle counts = 3.888v / 0.00488v/Count = 797 Counts (rounded up)

the only difference is that he soldered his together i think. i have the one you linked and will hopefully getting it finished up soon. It is totally plug and play, the only reason mine is taking time is because i'm extending the ECU harness so i can mount the computer in the cabin. but IIRC sean's is the DIY pnp version which includes everything to plug and play but ships "some assembly required"

Yep, exactly what he said. I think that one is about $300 more, in the end I wanted to build my own so if problems ever did arise I would know what to do to fix it instead of having to ship it off somewhere. Totally user preference, though.
