Meh, its cheap but its a bit of a backwards step in my opinion. I prefer a hot rodded M10 any day of the week, it'll make more power and is certainly more period. With all due respect it seems like your taking a lot of shortcuts and compromises and disguising them under a claim of "artistic license".

Still be interesting to see what you do.

Not really taking shortcuts, it's just too hard to find a full M10 to rebuild anywhere within reason. With the neglected condition of the 2002 in general, I just don't trust the one in the car currently. I've already tried to buy 3, the one that was the most promising I wasted over 2 months on and never even received.

Plenty of people have swapped M42's and are plenty happy, but please prove me wrong.

For a core engine in the extended bay area call

    North Bay Bavarian
    or
    A1 Imports
    or
    Casey Motorsport
    or
    BTM Motorworks

The M42 isn't inherently bad, just that I feel a hotrod M10 is much better suited for the 2002. Much more of a rewarding drive (granted its just an opinion, but it's based off of driving plenty of different 02 combo's). The afor mentioned shops would probably be happy to give you a quick ride if you approached them right.

I would agree, an M10 has much better modding support available.

Stock for stock the M42 does have a tad more power, gets better gas mileage, and has an easy 5 speed bolt-on option. Really I just want to get it driving for now, and I can worry about a "fun" engine later. I need to sell my e30 or part it out to fund the build up of the 2002.

I'll ask those places if there's any M10 blocks and heads on hand however.

The M42 decreases displacement to 1.8L (as opposed to 2.0L), and once you mildly hotrod the M10 (292 cam, 9.5:1 pistons, 38/38 downdraft [or sidedrafts]) your making a fair bit more than the M42 while being still being 91 octane street friendly.

I think he means you'll be throwing a lot of weight towards the front of the car, at least more than was naturally meant for these little cars. Though it can be fixed via suspension tuning and corner balancing to dial most of that back, so I don't see why that's always the reaction to a swap.

It's hard to cite how much weight you're adding, because nearly every source for engine and trans weight conflict with each other (including dealer specs).

I'm just shooting out my tush. It's one thing to say "corner balance and suspension tuning" its another thing to actually do it. Simply put, the M50 doesn't add enough power over a proper M20/S14/F20/Sr20/13b swapped car to justify the added weight, engine position, and fabrication work. If you want to go for it, don't let me stop you, just be aware that you wouldn't be fooling anyone who's worked on these cars for any length of time. If you're goal is to impress the masses then go for it.

There's been only two properly done dual cam swaps I'd like to drive

What in the world are the odds? Say hi if you ever see me out with the cars.

Did you ever actually sell your '73? Or is this yours?

    WHat happened to Le-ah ?

I Loved the story you had on that car as to how you got it.
A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove. But the world may be different, because I was important in the life of a child.

Your BMW's are like some of my friends 1911's ...truly a unique and very personal accomplishment.

I have always always enjoyed your posts

Thanks dude. I know I definitely don't go by the normal bimmer building guidelines at all. I am glad (some) people can appreciate a different take on these cars we all love so much.

Big stuff happening on the 2002 soon!
