So I've been contemplating something lately, a simple 'add on' to our oem diffuser to give it a bit more size. This would be only for aesthetics, and I'm fully aware of this.
Similar to 'neverdone's' add on diffuser for the Z3.
(BTW I'm aware of the rusty car...)
So I started with your basic M3 diffuser
Then I found a hacked up diffuser that I used as a template.
Cut it at the 'rib' for a section
Then I traced them to some pieces of wood (Actual part will be ABS Plastic and I'm going to try to make a CAD model of this)
and stuck them on over the rib section of the diffuser for a bit more enhancement.
A pic from farther back to get a better view (sun kinda washed this out)
Sooooo....what do you guys think? I'm haven't done it yet, but they will be mounted using trim tape and each will be predrilled with two screwing coming up from the bottom into the diffuser. I might even put a side sheet on to better blend the two together.
Thoughts?

I think you found a very simple way to dress it up. Nice work get a prototype and sell it to one of the forum sponsors then retire on the royalties

They stick out like a sore thumb.
I like the idea though. It might work if the pieces were flush with the bottom edge.
I really like it, gives it more of a boxy aggressive look, I hate all these new smooth curves on modern cars. Great looking M3 too. You could certainly try selling them
I think it looks okay. But I think you're on to something better. You're idea is awesome, it needs more development to look like "could have been oem".
I'd buy it
Thanks! I have talked to 'neverdone' (donewhenimdead.com) once before but then I back burnered this project. I'll probably contact him again.
I think the whole I idea is to make it stand out a bit more. If it were flush to the bottom I'm not sure if it'd even be noticeable compared to stock?
What are you thinking? I'd like to have it be as oem-ish as possible, so how could I do it better? (I'm really just asking for you thoughts to make this better).
I was thinking a side sheet to cover where the surfaces meet. Also may make the overall size just a bit larger and longer so it goes farther under the car towards the front.
To make it really appear oem, I think it'd need to be a whole new diffuser, and DTM Fiberwerks already has pretty much just that. I want something that just adds on to what we have at a much better price point (DTM's is $500)
I sit all day at my workstation doing ProE/Creo - I'm thinking I'll be able to get some time to do it BUT...depending on the out come I may upload a step file here and share (Assuming I never try to sell them).
Thanks everyone for your thoughts/opinions, I think I'm on the right track
bump for more thoughts?
make one for the non m bumper, or the 'm diffuser for non-m bumper'? I doubt it will blend as well as it does with the M bumper. Good job though, I think it looks great and has that OEM feel to it. Maybe add larger fins like you said. I've noticed most e36s have that natural rake to it so this would be a great way to sort of hide the underside.

Thanks! I would like to test fit this on a nonM Mstyle diffuse and see if it'll fit
Working on CAD-ing it up. First getting diffuser side correct (it is such a weird shape), then will draft up some side profiles (with a bit more smoothness than the wood pictured above)

getting there....leaving a tiny bit of room for some double stick tape.

and a first stab. Need to cut a few different shapes out and see how they look on the car.

Good work
Like the creativity. The last design is nice, no more air gaps between the diffuser and these inserts.

yep, that's the goal
Found a local car guy with a 3D printer...so looking like I can get some exact proto parts to test fit and make some iterations. Progress!
**Edit** some new looks: The natural rounds to the oem diffuser 'ribs' cause a crack to form between the rib and my piece, so I'm toying with the idea of adding a side sheet. Used CF in the model just to make it stand out a bit.

Another more aggressive idea.
Progress!
