    484 DME in place of a 404?

What is the consequence of using a 484 DME in place of a 404?
I sold a 404 to a member here and accidentally shipped the 484 that was sitting next to it.
Is the 484 a good replacement or do I need to get my dumb ass to FedEx again?

Didn't work in Janders' 94 540 when we tried to swap it in... but that also had a 484 specific chip. Not sure what happens if you put a 404 chip in a 484 DME and try to run it in a 404 car. 404 chip in a 484 DME in a 484 car didn't work.

That's what I thought, DWS issue I believe.
If it is easily defeated my buyer might want to try rather than wait for me to fix my mistake. I'm not going to ask him to swap chips. Anybody?
    DAMN IT!

It worked fine for one of my 95 540i/6. You have to cut the green 66 pin to get the 404 to work. Is that what you are doing? A 404 in place of a 484 or the other way around?

    If it's a 484 where a 404 was, than I would think not...If this is the case I have a 404

A 404 chip in in the 484 might work. Unlikely but possible. If that doesn't work then its a no-go. The 484 EWS is more complicated than the 404 and will not work without the matching code from the EWS control unit. Unless the EWS function is disabled completely. There are EWS delete chips for the e36, but I have not seen one for the 404/484.

I have tried a 404 chip in a 484 DME on an E34 with EURO !! spec, engine even did not start. I assume it is because of the EWS.
Switched back to the 484 original chip and engine started immy.

Thanks guys. I'll need to exchange the DME.

I compared 404 dme hardware with 484 hardware, I opened both DMEs and looked inside, they are both 100% identical even the numbers on the boards, even the numbers on both eproms are the same 0267358720. But if I put eprom from 404 in 484. Then 484 does not work on 1994 540i, no start, no 'check engine' light on key on.

There's some pretty obvious hardware differences between the two. Since the 8051 microcontroller can have assignable I/O pins in the code I bet some legs of the controller in the microprocessor chip changes. The 484 firmware section of the code is much longer then the 404 firmware

Yes but 404 eprom should work if the hardware is identical, ews is in the eprom? Also I heard a rumor where European 404 came with much hotter software producing more power?

you can certainlly get a 404 DME to work in a EWSII 484 car by cutting the heavy wire to that pin.. whatever the number is and they are numbered.. the ware is curved you just snip it on either side of the curve and you can run your EWS later model 484 540 with a 404 DME.. I do this and did this while I mailed my 484 DME to DUDDMD to write an EWSII chip for it.

I am not talking about that. We are talking about 484 dme in place of 404

Here is a little spin to the question, will the 484 DME work with a 404 chip in a car that has the m60b40 engine swapped like the e30? Reason, I may have damaged my 404 ECU when I mistakenly short a live engine wire to ground. However, the original chip is not in, or could it be that the ECU is not damaged, just the chip?

Not in my experience, the chips between the two aren't interchangeable.

I had to mail the whole 484 DME to DUDDMD for him to write an EWSII chip for it so the chip and DME are spcific to one another. You can only run a 404 with the right Pin cut in an EWSII car. Not a 484 DME in anything but the car it came with.

I don't understand why you wouldn't spend the $40-$100 for a used 404 DME on ebay to rid of EWSII, even if EWS isn't giving you issues it will remove a potential problem later and it open up's your performance tune chip options.

Hello. I buy chip in ebay for my 1996 e38 m60b30, 484 dme. I put the chip, car cranks but wont start. Seller tell that i need to cut green wire, 7 pin. But i cant found any green pin at all in ecu connector.
