    F/I engine oil weight choice?

I don't want to get into a discussion of oil brands. What oil weight are you using in your forced induction engine?

I have an E36 M3 with stage II AA Twinscrew supercharger daily driver, no track time. I am thinking either 0w-40 or 5w-50...the 0w-40 is what is recommended for the stock engine, is that sufficient or should a F/I engine use different weight oil than a N/A engine?

Looking forward to what others have to say.

    yes
40w under 40deg. 50 over it. Adjust your lower number to your average LOWEST temp. In EC, MD, I'd run 10-40 in winter/late fall, 15-50 late spring/early fall. Just take it easy until the oil warms up....thoroughly.

That's about what I was going to recommend as well unless it is a fully rebuilt from the ground up motor (which I am assuming its not) in which case I would go with a bit lighter weight.

I would go with the lightest weight oil that gets you good oil pressure under your operating conditions.

If you are running a proper thermostat controlled oil cooler, the ambient temp should not play a significant role in choosing the hot weight. But since I don't have a cooler, I've been running Liquimoly 10W60.

Maybe not in hot Cali, but here in Canada we might want to choose a lighter weight oil like 5-40 or 0-40..

Nope, no cooler as yet. The way my car gets used, the bigger problem is cold oil. By the time it's up to temp, I'm at my destination. And the bit of hooning it does see is short bursts. For *my* usage, I"ve been watching for an OE oil->water cooler I can adapt to my appllcation.

Thanks for the advice all. I am going to go with M1 0w-40 euro spec for this oil change and see how it does. Will update if it doesnt work out.

You will be fine, M1 0W-40 is good oil with a great additive pack.

Do you run a cooler too? Do you have an oil temp gauge?

    Thanks!
