Impressive indeed!
Any updates?
Hello my friends!
Not as fast as I would like the constructing is continuing. I finished collecting the top of the engine. now I should to fix many little things that take a lot of time. Now, in order.
Before I used 33 mm followers produced by Supertechperformance. They were erased by BMW racing camshafts. Maybe this followers will good work with pig iron camshafts but not with BMW steel billet camshafts. I discussed the problem with the manufacturer. Supertechperformance agreed to make deposit on sum of broken followers. So I don't have any pretension to the producer. They behaved decently.
I ordered new 35 mm follower. They are a little bit heavier than 33mm, but the 35 mm followers will work much longer due to the large area of the work surface. I have never seen erased camshaft bed with 35 mm hole but saw a lot erased bed with 33. mm. The margin of safety is more important for a rally car. So at first I should prepared new camshaft bed for 35 mm followers. In order to use the dry tappets you need to cut off ledges in the bed. Firstly it's provides easy access to the follower. When you set up thermal gap you have to pull out the follower several times. If you do not cut ledges, each time you have to lift the bed of a camshaft. Secondly the ledges could limit the valve lift If the base diameter of the camshaft is less than in OEM camshaft. The main pressure is directed to the camshaft caps, so this alteration does not have any effect on the resource of camshaft's bed.
Parallel to this, I eliminated one problem. On 9500 rpm the OEM hydraulic actuator pump which work OEM pulleys dies very quickly. I think the water pump is also not live long. So I shoul to increase diameter of slave pulleys or decrease the diameter of master. There are no free space to increase pulley of water pump and not more for hydraulic actuator pump pulley. My decision was to decrease diameter of master pulley. I purchased a billet of duralumin (D16T) and machined new pulley as small as the design permits:
I prepared new wheel set for first start There are old school bmw style, 15'. In white color looks like professional rally wheel:
When I examined the bottom of the car, I saw that the cooling coil of steering hydraulic rubs the surface of the oil pan. I also noticed that the engine sits too low. The reason was in the engine support cushions. They sank down. I also discovered that OEM engine lugs are very weak and usually break down very often when you go on a bad road. It was decided to make a new custom lugs, which will use the VAZ suspension silentblock.
Also we produce front custom strut. It's very firm )))
The rally championship will start 25-th of April. Time is very small but I should will be on start ))
Best regards!
