It has finally come time to try out this new harmonic balancer. I'm currently in the middle of it and have just gotten my old one off. I need to run up to the store and but a new belt so I thought I would update this and show pictures of what I can see now that it is off. Old vs new.

I will update this again after I go for a drive and (hopefully, fingers crossed) my problem is fixed.

I'm here to say that I have finally fixed my problem! The harmonic balancer was the culprit after all. Thanks for all of the help everyone gave me!

Good that it is fixed and you've followed up with the solution to help those searching in the future.
Too bad all the machinations to get you that DME were for naught. There was a fellow searching for one in the classifieds just a few days ago

Yeah hopefully this will help someone out in the future! But don't even worry about the DME, it ended up making it here so that's all that matters. Thanks for letting me know too, I'd love to sell it to someone who needs it for the same price.

I have only redlined it once since I fixed it and I have driven a lot since then so I think my car will still be safe

You have an extra 404 DME?

And 5 years later it seems I'm going to need a new harmonic balancer for my 740i having the exact same issue. Thanks for this post!
