Nice work. I had to reinforce mine to after I snapped one of the welds.

I am loving this thread! All this information is so useful; that my idea of building a 540it (5-600whp), in the near future, seems more possible.

My next plan is to do something with an e39 touring. Or a 323 I have. But that's a ways away. I think a touring with that kind of power would be killer.

Small update. Jim from Cipco industries has sent me a prelim drawing of the Billet main caps I am having made. We have a solid print so now its on to production. wont be long they will be here. Then its on to, line honing, boring the caps, decking, then machining for all bearings tolerances. we are getting closer!

Here are the stock ones for comparison.

Sweet build thread, and those new caps look like they're going to be awesome!

On an F/I build wouldn't coating everything like you have cause the likelihood of pre-ignition to increase if some of the heat can't dissipate through the motor as with an uncoated setup? I know you cited NASCAR and their motor coatings, but that's N/A. I honestly don't know the answer, but something about this made my gut grumble a little... Or it just could have been my lunch.

Looking at those main caps and the drawings of your custom ones made me thought about somebody making a girdle for the M54 engines. The design of the M62 block seems to be adequately strong and well enough to absorb/dissipate/transmit the harmonics of a running engine. The M54 is different but has this additional support for the main caps like a bridge to the block if you can understand what I mean. For instance:

And, so I thought what if somebody could build an actual main girdle to perhaps aid in additional support in the bottom end of the block. We know that Nissan, Cummins, and others do/did this for their engines. For example:

It would be nice feature for a high horsepower build project!

Nice caps. Was there something that surfaced those as being a particular issue / weakpoint or is it just proactive upgrade for upgrades sake?

The idea was crossed. But given a couple of minor issues with the principle we decided not to.

Its not a KNOWN breaking point. But as you guys know its a high stress point. And with the blocks increasing twist at the 1000 HP mark I decided heck what can it hurt. No one else has ever used them or had any produced. So this will be a first.

Just stock to billet comparison we are going to see a big addition in strength and rigidity.

Seems like a sound plan. Cant wait to see your build come together. Hey, that machine shop is pretty close to me. Did you contract them directly or do you have a shop local to you contract them?
