I have looked at their stuff before but I am going to move ahead with the z33 transmission and see how much it takes to fit it. I am not really interested in putting the 5-speed zf back into the car, and the 6-speed is pretty spendy.

As for the shifter..the Hoke and and other similar relocation mounts for the shifter keep the functionality of the reverse detent. I plan on using one of these as the basis for the shifter solution.
In the pictures my motor wasnt in all the way because it was hitting the pan on the crossmember and still needed to go back, but it was getting stuck on the trans and tunnel. I made my own mounts, have a look through my other photos on Flickr.

The shifter location was still really far back. I remember looking down the shifter hole and seeing front half of the black plate that's on the trans (see previous pictures). I know you can shorten the linakge all the way to the end (shorter than the Hoke) by cutting off the stock joint and putting a spherical bearing on the end of the output shaft. Even with it that short you still need to bring it forward at least 6-8 inches and you'd have to cut the top of tunnel to do so.

i had a look at my tunnel again tonight and it looks like i may be wrong about the subrame wrapping into to the tunnel. It felt and sounded like it was a bulked up skin tieing into the subframe. Even if you can remove it i still don't believe there will be enough room without excessive hammering and cutting.

I guess you have most of the parts on order so might as well give it shot. Again, if your fab guy finds an easy solution to make it fit id love to know because i have all my parts ready to go

I actually think for the shifter that I can take a mount similar to the hoke that has bolt on horizontal members, remove them and flip them around so they are pointed back instead of forward and then just make new through holes to mount the shifter above the trans then weld a 'u' onto the shift linkage to hook it all up. It is hard to describe.

When the car comes back the engine will come out and we can take a look at it and see how much more room we need and decide from there how to attack it. I think switching from the Collins kit to the maverick kit will help since it will pull the trans about 3/4" forward versus the Collins kit. I need to pull the bellhousing off of the trans and go get it milled, then we can get started on this.

How much further did it need to go to clear the pan?

Losing 3/4 of an inch may help a bit... It needed to go back at 1/2 to 3/4 to clear the pan. I also have my motor mounted as low as it can go before hitting the pan and it had clearance issues with the top of tunnel and trans.

Again youll find out that the tunnel closes in as it gets further back and theres literally no room around the trans. It was really tight in the tunnel when i tried to shove it in and was hitting the top of the tunnel all the way down to the shifter (i know it wasnt in fully but i can guarantee room is minimal at best). Making any linkage for this will require cutting the tunnel, not to mention any service work will be imposible with pulling the engine. Exhaust clearance is another issue...

I know your eager to do something different but its been tried before in New Zealand without success either (editor of NZPC magazine. He had a toyota v8 with z33 trans, didnt fit and went rotary). i bought all my stuff knowing i needed to do fab work but after everything was in, i knew i bit off more than i could chew. Dont get me wrong, this is totally possible but it would require a custom subframe and modified firewall/trans tunnel. The point im trying say is if you're trying to save money, this probably isn't the best route to go...

I hate to be a downer so im gunna say go for it since you're on a roll here. If your fab guy can work some magic you'll have the first E36 2jz with Z33 trans

In all honesty, I am doing it because it seemed to be a good alternative to the disgustingly expensive v160, and the gearing works better with my 3.15 lsd than the r154, and it seems to be a stronger transmission out of the box. I was not really doing it to be different..though I know it will be when it is done.

I will be posting our progress here as we get to fitting it and we will see what we come up with.

I appreciate the insight and the heads up up!

Nope. I'll update it when I get the car back from fabrication. I anticipate this being in the next week or so, but I have thought that many times. I have been doing a lot of searching for ways to help fit this cd009 into the car a little easier. I will update this morning when I am back at my PC.

Great! It's a cool project, and I was a little concerned that maybe it died on the vine. Glad that's not the case!

Nope..it is not dead. There just hasn't been much progress for a while because the car has become a side project for the shop that is doing the fabrication, which actually kind of worked out since I have recently moved.

Here are some pictures of the CD009 dis-assembly.

This face that you see (inside the bellhousing) is where a couple of people have begun developing an adapter plate. The adapter plate would allow the use of a W58/R154 bellhousing once the CD009 bellhousing is removed. This would be a great option for chassis like ours that have a tight tunnel. That said, it is in a prototyping/testing stage...but I am keeping up with one of the guys working on it for the MKIII Supra chassis.

    Tail Housing

The bellhousing has to come off regardless of the path I choose...which means there is a good bit of disassembly to be done in order to get the housing off. Luckily there is a DIY tutorial on doing just that.

The current plan is to use the Maverick adapter kit. This lets me use a single disc 350z clutch, with their custom flywheel. The single disk requires a 1/2" to be taken off the bellhousing (3/8" for a multi-disc) which will help pull the trans closer to the engine..and hopefully help a good bit in clearancing the bellhousing where the tunnel meets the firewall (mentioned above). I have a few ideas for the shifter relocation, and the guys over on ClubLexus are also working on a couple new ideas (there are a few hack jobs that seem to work that have been done already, and one that nets a long shifter throw). Timing is really everything on whether I use the Maverick kit, or the bellhousing adapter..just depends on when the adapter is ready to be sold.

Good luck I hope you can get the tranny running. There is a local guy with a 1000hp mk3 thats been running a marlin crawler r154 for past couple years at the track and still hasnt broken on him, plus those cars are ~500lbs heavier than ours so it gives me hope for mine haha

Me too! The R154 is a good trans..no doubt. I have one in the car now..it would be nice to have a better option though!

There are several sc300 guys that have successfully completed this trans swap and have nothing but good things to say..so I am hopeful!

Thanks. It was a custom made piece. It is something the shop might put on their site shortly amongst other things that were designed for the car. Yes I will be getting gte covers.

It is a 3" all the way back. We shall see..it will be fine for now.

I gotcha, well I'll worry about it when it's running. Lol still need 1200+ cc injectors.

Get some 1700's and call it a day haha, future proof yourself. It looks like your heater hoses will work with that intake, saves you the hassle i had

Removed the bumper to get a better picture of the intercooler..I had to remove it anyway. I have the engine harness laid out on my work bench in the basement, time to ring it out and label the connectors so that we can install it in the car and get going on wiring up the MS3x, lq9s, injectors, etc..I hope to get a start on wiring this weekend!

Here you can see how it mounts..I really don't think it could be any easier..

I still need to get a PS pump, alternator, and A/C compressor and figure out the lines for each of those.

I might skip doing E85 this year and install my flex fuel sensor/lines over the winter to be honest..
