    Small update again..

I have not been in a rush to get this done, so a few things got pushed ahead of my car at the shop, but it is on the lift now and progress is being made!

Ca has a motor set in it, the mounts are finally being fabbed. The intercooler core came in last week, so the tanks are being made and welded up this week along with the mounts. "The biggest core I can fit" is the size of the intercooler, lol. 3" In/out.

The motor I am awaiting an update on. One of the cylinders has a little imperfection in it where the rings got stuck to the wall from sitting for a while in a junkyard. That cylinder was at bdc, but they are going to hone the cylinder and see if that is enough to make it right. If it is not 100% correct, I will have to get some .020" oversized pistons....which then I might as well put rods in it as well...such a slippery slope! lol

Anyone know what is needed to fit a Walbro 416 pump in the e36 tank? I think is it the same as a 255, but with a larger diameter at one end of it, but I am not too familiar with the e36 hanger to know if addition parts are needed to fit it in the stock hanger (for now). I think this pump should be plenty until I go back in with the dual pump/bigger injectors/dual hanger. From my reading a single 416 should be able to handle 6-650whp on E85 without issue.

Welp, I got some bad news today. The motor will have to be overbored .020" to clean up the one cylinder. It was right on the cusp of being okay, but I would rather bite the bullet and have it bored. So, today a set of the new Wiseco AFR pistons (~9.6:1 compression with the headgasket we have) with some beefy wrist pins and a set of Eagle rods were ordered. At least when I decide that my goals are changing with the car I have plenty of head room, lol.

Those ought to do. Eagle ESP rods, 3/8" arp 2000 rod bolts. Saves me rotating mass and should support about 1100whp if I ever go completely insane. Lol.

    Updates is small again.

Mounts are built. I am heading down to see the car this week. Decided to build mounts that would allow us to us stock e36 mounts. This will of course mean I can upgrade the mounts if I decide to do so.

A few more fuel system components have been ordered, the parts pile is growing again in the garage! Going to basically go straight to e85 and let ms3 do ethanol content based mapping.

Lol, there hasn't been much to update..but I am just trying to share any details I have/parts to be used before I forget, lol.

Delays from Wiseco on having the new piston design in stock..hope to have an update from them next week.

Allegedly the pistons finally shipped from Wiseco on Friday, I hope to have confirmation of this today. Everything else is ready to assemble the motor once the pistons get here and it all gets balanced! I really hope to see the motor back by end of next week if the pistons did indeed ship.

For now I am working through gear ratios and tires to figure out how to put this power to the ground as best I can without flares/fender destruction..

Thinking for now I would do a sticky 255/40/17 out back for normal driving...and then a 16" pair of -is wheels out back with some drag radials or slicks. I just have to figure out the sizing and what I need to do to fit the 16s out back (I think some caliper shaving might have to occur, but I will have to look into it further..I do have my stock DS1s I could load up with DRs too..

I am also working on picking up a set of freshly rebuild GC track/school coils and camber plates!

Absolutely. I don't mind spending the bit extra while I am in there anyway for something like rods/pistons. I just have to draw the line somewhere...but I seem to have to keep erasing and redrawing it as this build keeps moving along.

I have heard a set of e30 m3 16's will clear in the rear without modification. Might be an option.

You might be right about that! I remember reading that people had luck using them on an E36 M car without much problem. A 15" wheel will give you plenty of "sticky" tire options too.

Yeah, I don't really want to grind on the caliper if I don't have to. A 15 would be better for sure, but I'll dog some and see what I can find on 15s.

Tonight or tomorrow I am heading down to the shop to see the car, get some updates and snap some pics of the progress..this portion of the project (the fabrication done by the shop) has taken a lot longer than expected for various reasons..I hope to have some promising pictures after I head down there tonight or tomorrow.

So.. Got confirmation that the motor is together. There was a lengthy delay in getting the head back and gettin all of the shims for the lifters.

After it is all said and done the motor ended up ~9.8:1.

Hope to have more updates and progress to show shortly.

    Update!

Some pictures (old) of the engine as it was assembled.

The fabrication work is wrapping up this week with the exception of the sheetmetal manifold that is being built. The hope is to finally get the car back to my garage next Friday! From there what the car needs:

Fuel System Installed/Lines run - Walbro 416/485/whatever you want to call it..HKS OG Fuel Rail, FIC900's, etc..
    Megasquirt3x wired/installed
    Mojo Lq9 COP kit installed/wired
    Hoses Plumbed
    AC Lines made
    Throttle Cable
    Turbo Rebuilt

So..I know I keep saying the fabrication will be wrapping up..it hasn't. That said..I have seen the car and it is very near completion (for the work being done). It is expected to be returning to me next week. The fabricator is comfortable with the parts/fit/finish and will be able to recreate the parts once my car leaves. They will be releasing the parts for sale once the car comes back to me.

In the last couple of months I have been doing a lot of reading and talking to members of various boards and have made some changes to the build..

I am ditching the R154 in favor of a Nissan CD009 (late 05-06 350z/late 05-07 G35) transmission. The CD009 is much easier to find, it is 20 years newer, shifts like a dream, is as strong (stronger from what shops have done with them) as the R154, and I will not have to have a higher dollar large case diff built to get the R154 gearing to work. I will be pairing it with my 3,15 LSD once the diff gets checked out. I pick up the transmission on Friday! Then I will be putting up the R154 stuff for sale.

The one item to figure out with the CD009 is the shifter placement, but I think I have a plan for getting that corrected thanks to the guys over on ClubLexus (SC300 has the same shifter placement issue). The adapter kit from Collins will allow this transmission to bolt up to the JZ.

I am also changing out the FIC900s for some 1200s from FiveOMotorsports, which will go into a modified stock GE fuel rail for the time being.

I just wanted to update this and let you guys know the build is not dead! I will put up pics and such as soon as I can...the electronics pile for this build is taking over part of my man cave! lol

Nice build! Im slowly getting there too

Don't want to burst your bubble but I wanted to give you a heads up on the Z33 trans.... I tried to fit it to my 2jz and it doesn't fit it the trans tunnel, the Z33 is a beast and unless you want to build a new tunnel there's no way its going in. Length is another issue. Even if you shorten it to max you'll still have to rig something up to bring the shifter forward (forgot to take pics in rage but when I looked down the shifter hole I could only see the front half of the black plate. see pictures)
Save yourself the disappointment I had and stick with R154 haha

to give you a reference on how big the trans is....
350z transmission fit fail by SLLeroux, on Flickr

The motor still needs to go back 1.5 inches and it smashes the tunnel already....

    hitting on driver side
350z transmission fit fail by SLLeroux, on Flickr

    hitting on passenger
350z transmission fit fail by SLLeroux, on Flickr

No amount of a BFH will help you here because the tunnel only gets smaller the further it goes back...

I didn't take a pic of the tunnel location but trust me some real fab work needs to be done here, as in full race car mode.

Hopefully you didn't purchase the Collins adapter and flywheel already like I did :/

It has been fitted in a e46 sedan...he had to do a little work on the entrance to the tunnel but it didn't look or sound like anything that would require the whole tunnel to be redone..apparently on the passenger side he was able to remove a secondary panel of metal, and repaint the metal underneath, and a little bfh action and it was able to fit. I am not saying you are wrong at all..just wondering. Is the e46 sedan tunnel that much different from the e36 coupe?

As for the shifter..I have a solution for that. .

The tunnels are different in the E46. You cant really do much in the E36 because the frame rail molds into the trans tunnel and there no "second skin" to pull back either

this is an E46 (sedan) trans tunnel, it looks tight but it looks like theres more room and you can see the top layer of sheet metal he must have removed

This is a bad picture but you can see the frame rail go into the inside of the trans tunnel and messing with that could hurt the car structurally....
You can also see how it starts to close in and gets narrow at the back
350z transmission fit fail by SLLeroux, on Flickr

Id be interested to see if your fab guy can make it work, id love to run my Z33 trans too!

If your planning on doing a linkage to pull the shifter forward don't forget reverse has to be pushed down and over to get it in gear, so extending it too far forward might give you some issues there

Keep up the build, love to see this thing when its done!

As E36leroux said it's a gigantic transmission there is linkage that connects threw the hole on the top of the transmission that came from one of the trucks but good luck finding a place to buy it. That swap for E36 is more pain then it's worth.

If your not planning on revving to the moon I think a t56 is the only cheap six speed trans swap

Well, we shall see how it goes. How much further up or forward did the trans need to go in that picture Sean? Also what mounts were you using to fit the engine and trans?

As for the shifter..the Hoke and and other similar relocation mounts for the shifter keep the functionality of the reverse detent. I plan on using one of these as the basis for the shifter solution.
