Hi, I'm currently looking to buy an e46 M3, VIN WBSBL93412JR17926. I was just curious about the service history of the vehicle, if the rod bearings were done...etc. I called my local dealership and they said that they aren't able to run the vin on a car that isn't mine. Also I don't want to spend $40 on a carfax if I don't have to.
Magic 8-ball might help.
Not so much a signature as a cry for help.
Hold on, saw this in a cartoon once...think I can pull it off.
the car had the rod bearings done 22,151 2004. the selling dealer is in Maryland. the last vist was to replace the drivers & passenger air bags under warranty 123,715 5/25/17.
Who cares if the rod bearings were done at the dealership? They replace them with the same faulty parts, BMW never fixed the rod bearing problem on the S54 (or S62, S65 or S85) - they have rod bearing problems from 2000 up until they stopped making them in 2008. If you want to make sure the bearings dont fail, replace them with treated/coated parts.
Yes, BMW did blame a bad parts supplier for the early rod bearing failures and yes they did change part #'s around 04 and yes there is a belief that after a certain year S54's dont have rod bearing problems but no, they never really fixed it.

Hello. I'm new to forum as I don't own a BMW but I am looking at buying a 2005 330Ci convertible. If anyone could get me details on service history before I commit I'd sure be appreciative. I have the Carfax but it has limited info on service performed. VIN is WBABW53435PL51497.
Thanks fo any help

Contary all the chat about rod bearings in m cars, I only had one e46 at the dealer ship that threw a rod, we replaced the engine. I have been working with bmw's for a very long time and don't have any rod bearing problems, ever. I have a customer with 220,000 miles on his original e39 m5 engine, never been apart. Sure if your beating the shit out your m car then maybe you will eat up your bearings.
