So, i am getting my Service II today and received a call from the shop. I suspected that my oil pan gasket had a leak, sure enough, it is. Now here is the kicker... the gasket is $17 bucks.. Labor is 400 bucks. : Appearantly, you have to take a bunch of shit off to get to this. Does this sound right to anyone?
I remember reading in the Bentley manual about removing the oil pan that you have to remove a number of things to get to it - maybe even lifting the engin, so that's probably a realistic price for that job.
That's assuming that it really needs to be done.

Its right, mine is leaking as well. You have to support the engine from the top and remove the front subframe just to take off the oil pan...
I will probably be doing it myself here shortly...

thank you for the input. the thing that sucks is that i have a few things that are wrong all at once and it is adding up:
front/rear breaks. pads and rotors
oil pan gasket
new thermostat..
maintanence on a BMW is not cheap!
You're right about the cost of maintenance. That's why you have to learn how to do at least some it yourself, so you can lower the cost a bit.

Brakes and thermostat you should be able to do at your house with simple hand tools
