First time owning a xi. Had it in to my trusty local shop and they suggested changing the transfer case fluid. I agreed, and they did. FWIW, they drained and filled twice to clean it out (which does make sense).
The car now seems to drive better - it seems like there's better synchronization, for lack of a better word, between the front and rear drive. It just feels smoother (even though I need to replace the rear diff bushing). And as the British might say, the difference is not subtle - it's easy to tell.
Does the above make sense? Car has 176K; not sure it had ever been done before.
I've changed it in my jeeps but I didn't notice a difference. But depending on how dirty your fluid was, I guess it's plausible.
You heel-toe, I'll toe-floor.
The BMW engineers say that fluid will last a lifetime.

BMW speak: "Lifetime fluid" = the lifetime of the tranny/differential/transfer case!!!
Well it might not be replaceable but fluids gets burned and dirty with time, mines 100k and it feels great but i still have my doubts
