Not a huge update but something none the less.

We had found some rotors that were going to work for the brake setup but they were not ideal. So we got some hats from Ireland and then had some rotors made custom from coleman eng.

Here are the rotors when they showed up.

    Fronts

    Starting to mock stuff up

These are just sorta stuck in there...if you look to the left of the caliper it looks like they are hitting the wheel. The caliper is nut but there is a washer in there to keep the caliper clamped to the rotor. There is room all around.

    clearance between wheel and caliper

    rear rotor....nothing that exciting here.

Wow what a cool engine swap. If you guys crack the DME will you be releasing any relevant information?

Awesome work guys! Can you PM me and put me in touch with the DME tuner? Also if you aren't able to crack it, I have a source who is doing mine in a few weeks (Z4 V10 swap).

Also, the crossmember work looks pretty nice, so not to rain on your hard work but look into the 325ix crossmember, might be a nice fit (about 6inches forward of normal E30 x-member and holds the rack differently).

It's also very stiff cast aluninum.

Been spending some time on the brakes recently.

Will be running 135 brakes front and rear.

We bought e36 fitment wheels so we could space to fit and clear the brakes.

This is with about 12mm of spacing.

Front brackets were not to bad to make. Piece of 6061 aluminum... Stacked washers just used do to lack of hardware at the time. Brackets will be cleaned up some....edges rounded, etc.

We are using hats from IE with custom rotors from coleman. The hats have been installed INSIDE the rotors to give more clearance at the control arm ball joint.

Kinda hard to tell but nice and centered.

    All mounted up.

Now the rears were a MUCH different story. We machined the calipers and removed the mounting ears.

There was VERY little room between the mounting bracket and the backing plate. To keep enough material left in the bracket some was machined out to give clearance at the backing plate.

    mounted

The m5 uses a very odd radiator as it is actually two radiators stacked on top of each other. If BMW designed it that way we would love to keep it. But one issue is the m5 radiator is too wide.

    Sometimes you have to cut...

The cut part will be completely boxed in.

    And there we go...

The engine has been mounted but the trans has had a VERY temp mount. But that needs to change. So...getting going on that.

Just to show how big the e60 guibo is.

    Mount will be two parts.

One that bolts to the trans (flat part in picture below) and then the cross brace. There will be a poly bushing in between (update on that when it shows up Tuesday)

Nice brake setup. What are you planning to use for the master cylinder to feed these calipers?

We are switching to hanging wilwood pedals and masters. .625 front master and .75 rear. Should put more pressure for the front while keeping pedal effort easy.

For some reason this forum never emails me with subscribed threads. I'll have to check settings.

    Any updates?

Any updates on this build? I'd like to see where it's at now.

    Thanks.

Build was delayed for a bunch of different reasons but things are starting to move along again. The goal is to have it for vintage in NC the endish of May.

So...back to some updates. This will be a bit of a hodgepodge until I get on a bit more of a schedule to keep up on updates.

We had taken a cut out of the drivers side frame rail to fit the e60 radiator.

So then we needed to box it back up.

And we wanted AC so to fit the compressor and lines a notch was required on the passenger side.

Will get some custom lines but the e60 ones are a start...

Fitting the air boxes and making mounts

    Close to the ABS pump....

Similar setup on the passenger side.

The trans sits so high in the tunnel that there was NO room for the shifter carrier. So it got chopped and mounted a little different.
    Start with some raw bits...

Weld raw bits together...I am getting better at TIGing Aluminum but still have a ways to go. It's strong just not always pretty.

    VERY short shifter linkage

Some captive nuts welded into the tunnel.

    And bolted in

    A video of it working....
    https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5...2/IMG_8644.MOV

Adapting the E30 to S85 Power steering lines...
Tig some AN6 fittings on each.

Then there will be a short line made to connect the two.

Fit the stock e60 oil filter.
    Start with some cardboard

    Turn that cardboard into aluminum

Weld and add a gusset (again not super pretty but not terrible...)

    Mounted

Extra Steering linkage mount needed due to the extra Ujoint. Had to figure a way to be able to remove the mount so came up with this...

With the engine in the car.

Hard to tell but there is more room than this pic shows.

Sway bar wouldn't fit in the stock location so it was moved in front of the subframe.

Core support is removable so need to make it so it stays in...more captive nuts behind these allen bolts.

How is the steering effort/feel with this set-up? I was considering something similar when I make new headers on my e36....are there any pros/cons

    Feels pretty much like stock

    - - - Updated - - -

So the S85 radiator is more like two radiators on top of each other and the engine has 4 radiator hoses. Others have used aftermarket radiators but we want to make this as stock as possible so...we are using the stock radiator with VERY modified in/out.

Step one....cut the stock inlets off

    Start fitting...

    next one

    And another...

    Fitting hoses

    Three out of 4.....

I won't say I am great at tigging aluminum but sometimes things fall into place.

    #4

    Then there were four...

    tack them to the radiator

madness....If you look close each pipe has a bit of a bead roll to keep the hose on.

    It still fits...

I was going to say, not too much room in there for airflow eh?
