    Hi, Matt-
The body section of the factory WSM usually provides the placement dimensions info you are looking for. I can look this up when I get home and provide some info if you don't have access to the WSM.

It looks to be centered between the edge of the lid and the inner edge of the tail light. The top of the badge is even with the "cross hairs" of the roundel I believe.

Mine was exactly 1 inch from the right edge and the bottom edge of the trunk.
When I mounted my V12 emblem I noticed that some 1 inch painters tape lined up with the edges worked perfectly for helping me line it up to keep the emblems consistent.

    Matt-
Looks like the factory manual doesn't show it.(Although it does show the dims for my E24 rear badge.)
I measured my trunk lid badge just now. Mine is an original car, never been crashed or repainted so I know that 850i badge was placed by the factory. The bottom edge of the "i" is 55mm from the trunk lid RH edge (as you stand behind the car); the bottom edge of the "850i" is 20mm from the bottom of the trunk lid edge- the lenght of the badge is 20mm from the bottom edge of the trunk lid. With these two dims, you should be able to place your new badge correctly. Hope this helps!
