    Hi all.

I didnt think about calling BMW since I thought the strainer would be even more money... but I called them, and a brand new original strainer fitting both pumps, was only 20,- usd. so they are now on order...

I didn't order mine from Rockauto, I got it from highflowfuel.com, but when I replaced my fuel pump it came with a new strainer included.

Hej, the type of brand of strainer you can use depends on what pumps you bought. If they are factory Bosch pumps, then you can and should use the factory strainer (BMW Part # 16141181828 {~$15 USD}).

highflowfuel.com and TREPerformance.com both sell the same pumps. I went with the TRE-342 255lph pumps (http://treperformance.com/i-526-acur...1995-1998.html) That says it's for an Acura but it's the same pump they market for virtually any vehicle with an in-tank pump. Highflowfuel's version is model #HFP-342 and is virtually the same thing.

The TRE-342 does not fit in the stock carriers without drilling and cutting away parts of the plastic, so unless you're willing to do that, go with a stock Bosch pump (Bosch part # 69493 {$170-$250 each!}) and OEM strainer BMW Part # 16141181828.

If you decide to use an aftermarket platform like the TRE-342 or HFP-342, be prepared to make modifications. All hoses, hose clamps and red/black wiring was included with the TRE-342 pumps. (I spent $70 on each pump)

If you click on each picture and view them on Flickr you can get's tons more information about each component, I've added notes to each picture.

Thanks Hej, that 1004k pump looks to be almost identical to the stock Bosch design, use the factory BMW green strainer (BMW Part # 16141181828 {~$15 USD}). Here are pics of that 1004k unit: http://www.electricfuelpumps.com/make/BMW.html The wiring was included with the pump so I'm guessing it's got some chemical resistant jackets.

Oh definitely! I have owned the car for 4 years and already replaced fuel filters twice. I used Mann fuel filters, check AutoHausAZ.com. You also will want to replace the fuel hose splices at the filters. There are 6 hose splices around there that you should replace along with new clamps. When you do the job, first remove both fuel pump fuses and then start the car, let the engine run until it dies from lack of fuel, then take the gas tank lid off to release pressure in the tank, then you can go to work on the fuel system; this process releases the pressure in the system.

Thanks MJR. great info... I have not yet concentrated on the fuel line, but will for sure when I get the new filters and pumps and strainers... rockauto has the mann filters, I might as well order them along with the pumps... are their anything else I sould pay attention to, before ordering... might as well get items collected in terms of carriage pricing. I guess that the 6 hose splicings you are talking about mostly concerns fuel hoses...? are their any special joints or parts I sould order along...?

No problem Hej. Correction, I used Mahle filters, see picture below.

    So those 6 fuel hose splices are #16 (QTY 2), #20, #21 (QTY 2) and #22.
For #16 you can use regular 8mm fuel injection hose (must be fuel injection hose and not regular fuel hose). But for #20, #21 and #22 they are formed pieces and must be bought per part #. AutoHausAZ.com has three of the formed pieces for considerably less than the dealer, but for one of those pieces (#22 the longest one), you'll need to get it from BMW. See image below.

This is what all the parts look like!

Next, when you remove the pump, there is a fuel hose that is inaccessible unless you drop the fuel tank....Most people don't want to go through the trouble to drop the tank so they drill a 2" or 3" hole in the body under the rear passenger seat (LHD cars) to access the hose connection. I would recommend drilling that hole very carefully so you can access the hose end to replace it. Put a wet rag over the fuel pump assembly to prevent any sparks from hitting fumes. There are plenty of threads on how to do this, search on those. In addition, you may want to order QTY 2 of the #9 damper ring for the filters, in case they are worn or torn (BMW Part # 13321734056), they fit around your filters to dampen the vibration felt there.

Finally, you want to replace both plastic lock rings and rubber washers on your pump and level sensor inserts in the tank. (QTY 2 of #7 and QTY 2 of #8 in image below). If money allows, change #6 as well (~$150).
When installing #7, the rubber gasket, you need to seat that into the tank opening and lubricate the inside with some petroleum jelly then gently work the pump carrier assembly into place.
Finally, take care not to mix up the outlets, the lower one is for pump CYL 1-6 and the upper hose connector is for pump CYL 7-12.

And finally, you'll need a good tool to remove and to tighten the lock rings. I do NOT recommend trying to use pliers or screwdrivers to manipulate the plastic rings.

Assenmacher Specialty Tools makes "BMW 4622" which is a direct-replacement for BMW special tool # 161020, but a lot less expensive! I just picked one up and it grips the plastic lock rings on 8 notches very securely and allows use of a regular ratchet and torque wrench to tighten.
