bmw 328i 2007- The engine is making loud noise

    Hello Everyone,

This is my first post and hoping to get some advice from the experts before I go shell out some cash on this.

Car Details: BMW 328I-2007. Miles 72k.

Issue: It seems the engine is overworking. If my car is running and is parked at a spot, I can hear the engine sound 500 feet away. I did try to turn of the AC and the sound went down a bit but its still loud.

There are no indicator lights on the dash.

Thoughts or more details needed from me.

    Thanks

Boy this sounds like classic water pump failure but you should get an icon on the dash for this too. Look under the hood and see if the fan is on high setting. Unless it is just plain hot out that is my guess. If it is hot out that would be normal...
I see you are from Phoenix most likely normal given ambient temps...

Describe your engine sound. Is it a belt noise, a reving noise, an exhaust noise, a fan noise, or something else?

One common wear item is the belt tensioner and/or idler pulley. When they to they can make a whining, squeaking, or growling noise. They are a pretty minor item to replace.

If it sounds like your car is an airplane trying to leave the atmosphere, go get it looked at asap. Water pumps fail often and the aux fan setting goes to high to compensate

What about alternator bearing? Did you wash your engine with a high pressure jet?

Thanks for all the suggestion. It has cooled down in Phoenix and the humming noise has gone down to non- existent.

The squealing noise cones and goes. I am going to record it and post this over.

I did go to a BMW mechanic and they didn't find anything.

Thanks a lot for the comments and I shall keep you posted.

Squealing noise could have to do with the belt tensioner.

It's weird that the BMW tech did not even say anything about a pulley.

Agreed. I'm pretty sure that's a relatively common item to replace. A fairly simple and cheap repair as well.
