how did the race go? who won?

Just to clarify, these weren't races, just pulls at WOT to video suspension travel in Mexico.
I will just say this, one pull was very very close. We went at it on an upgrade hill and somewhat agreed to shut it down at the top of third. We both have the same gear set, but I run a slightly larger diameter tire. I hope to get the video up some time soon.

Some fun in the sun.

Here is my video of the day. Sorry I didn't have audio, but you get the idea of when we go.
Enjoy

My yearly update:
two months ago I went ahead and installed an ebay FMIC. About a month after that, I made a pull and promptly developed massive blow by and number 4 cylinder went dead. Pulled the piston today and found broken ring lands.
If anyone has an extra stock m52 piston I could really use it.

Thanks, I may take you up on that...
The motor is still in the car.. My current plan is to piece it back together with all OEM components, remove the turbo and run NA while I build a new bottom end with forged components.
i would more than be happy to pay for the shipping. This weekend I plan to pull the remaining Pistons to ensure the remaining five are in decent shape and get back to you. Thanks!

Check the bores and post a picture of the piston so we can check if the ring butted or what.

just let me know, they aren't going anywhere
thanks again for the Pistons. I should have it up and running within a week or two.
I don't think the rings butted. It's my understanding when they do, it pulls the crown of the piston off and then beats the crap out of the CC, but I could be wrong on that.
here is the top ring,
And the lands have seen better days,
The gasket looks good, even though the pre-ignition took out the piston.
So here is my theory why it broke, beside 11.5:1 CR and pump gas isn't the smartest thing to do. When I pulled this piston, there was FOD embedded between the top ring, piston crown, and cylinder wall. This in turned caused a gouge in the cylinder wall and judging by the looks of the piston, oil was being introduced into the CC and developed carbon build up. Thus, my theory of pre ignition over detonation took out the piston land.
And the rod bearing appears to have some hammering effects, maybe?

Do you have a picture of the bore? Does it have a nice score up the side?

I forget where the rings are placed relative to those scores but that damage could certainly be butted rings.

If you need any other parts, I have them and I am local..
After getting the engine put back together last year I made a rash discussion and remove the turbo and meth system and run the car NA over the summer while I planned out my next phase in the project. I ended up making up a direct port methanol system where all the hardware, nozzles are located on the underneath side of the manifold for a stealth look.
In late summer I installed everything and put in a 15# WG Spring after awhile and made a hit and blew off the charge pipe which cracked the inlet of the radiator, or so I thought. Long story short, I was pressurizing the cooling system because I only torqued the head studs to 38 ft-lb. I had nothing to loose, so I retorqued the studs to 80#s and she has been holding up fine wiTh no issues.
had some fun at my first ever auto cross. There where three other NA e36 m3s that where well prepped. Their fastest lap times where 50.1, 52.5 and 54.8, verses my time of 56.9 lol. I knocked off 6 seconds from my first run, so I was happy.

Good bye 2020, hello 2021.
the start of 2020 I invested in some new hardware to improve my 2020 autoX, which ended in zero time on the track due to covid cancellation.
late last fall I once again broke another piston ring land on #2 cylinder. The same situation that occurred 3 years ago. It turns out, that both of these pistons are in very worn and scorned cylinders, that are way out of spec. I believe now that the rings are acting as a longer lever on the ring land, which is breaking them off under power.
anyway, I had another piston, so I dropped the pan and replaced the broken piston and will bandage it up until I build me a forged 11.5:1 3.0 L.
also, I had been running a cracked cylinder head for about 16 months. The crack was between the intake and exhaust valve seats. What a bummer, since I spent countless hours porting and polishing on the stupid thing, now to become a scrap of junk in my shed.
I replaced the head with another NV head I purchased about 4 years ago. Didn’t even touch it, hoping the seals were good, which they appear to be.
knowing my crap motor cylinders are toast, I have turned the power down from 500 to 340 whp tohopefully make it through this year and hopefully do some autoXing. Maybe 2021 winter will be kind to were I build that forged engine I have coveted for so long.
or say screw the S50 and go LS NA .

I've been active at our local AutoX events this year. Having some good tires, new rear adjustable control arms, new poly bushings and stiffer roll bars have allowed me to be somewhat competitive in the novice class, placing 5th and then 3rd out of about 23 cars. In the last race, I totally changed my driving style to take advantage of 3rd gear and lugging the car around the course. For what ever reason, and maybe it's because I'm still learning how to drive around cones, running the car at a lower rpm is beneficial to reduce lap times. Lugging a 72mm eBay turbo on a 2.9L engine doesn't make sense, so this gives me a good reason to upgrade to a smaller better turbo that will spool faster and therefore, I'm thinking of the JB PT6266 with the smallest .84AR.
Since I have a turbo, they class me in the SM (Street Modified) class, which allows for a number of modifications to the car, of which I have not done yet. So far this year, I have completed a sun roof delete and just finished up on my home made spitter, which holds up to 70 mph speeds.

Hopefully the weather will hold out for next weekends race, to see if the spitter helped or hindered my attempt to move up in the class standings.

Never give up.
Holy torque spool, batman.
what a difference a 6266 turbo makes compared to the old eBay 72 mm.

Had my first outing today with the JB PT6266 gen 1 turbo at the auto X. The track was real fun, especially the afternoon course when they reverse direction. The left hand sweeper after the slalom was a pucker moment, third gear on a bouncy tarmac! This new turbo spools good, as I’m getting positive manifold pressure at around 2900 rpm in third gear, give or take. I’m only running a 7# spring, no EBC, and therefore these runs below made 7-1/2 and 9 max psi respectively.
We have our final event in two weeks, and then after that, I will likely do some more suspension mods, loose some mass (race seats and light weight battery) and be ready for the 2022 season, (pending the plandemic BS and likely $6,00 /gallon gas)
