navigation head unit/radio issues

Hey everyone, Im new to the e39 threads. My 530i has developed a strange problem. The radio no longer picks up any FM or AM signals. Additionally sound no longer emits from the right speakers (setting is set for equal balance). United BMW quoted me $850 to replace the head unit in order to address the problem.

Anyone encounter this? Is there a way to salvage the existing unit? Id replace it myself but I worry that if the dealer misdiagnosed or overdiagnosed the issue, I dont want to waste money ordering a used unit off ebay. Thought I would consult everyone here first.

I am fairly certain that your BM radio module is the culprit. That would be the following unit:

Thanks for the tip! I should add that the right speakers no longer emit sound even when a CD is being played.

There is a service on Ebay that repairs these units for around $175. There are also units for sale there for between $450 and $650 that are used. Good Luck - JT
