That's a chunk of eBay silicone hose, with the ICV jammed into it. It's still using the original 735i 059 DME and a rising-rate FPR. No doubt it's been chipped for the M106 parts. There's more than a little redneck engineering going on there, but it runs surprisingly well once it's warmed up.

Thanks for the welcome back! I'll be sharing more as I explore it. This one is like an archaeological site, it takes a lot of digging to find the treasure. These cars really are rugged - despite all the abuse this poor old POS has seen the doors still close with a solid thunk. If the rust hasn't bitten too deep I might beat it all winter instead of parting it out immediately. The next week or two will decide this car's fate.

More good news! I pulled the DME to see if it had a reputable chip installed. It did! Feast your eyes:

That's a TCD chip! I'm off to get me some documentation...
In other good news, I'm sure the block is an M106. The only M30 parts from the original 735i are the chipped 059 DME, the engine wiring harness, and most likely the AFM. The radiator is a normal E23 unit too.
The E23 gave up a few more parts to the E24, but it was worth the fuss. After the last ride I got a 1444 "all clear" code for the first time ever.
Alas, it's a temporary situation. I just tossed that engine in the car to get around for the summer. The compression is low and I suspect that engine has carbonized rings along with weak valve seals. I'll get the head redone over the winter and attempt new rings if required. I've heard good things about Valvoline MaxLife High Mileage semi-synth, might give that a try to see if I can't squeeze a few more miles out of this old lump.
