    NEW Diffs are avail from bmw; BMW Sells at the dealership counter new parts yes. At a cost

    NEW Lsd units are also avail aftermarket as well.

    A 25 year old used Oem zf is not = to a brand new 2017 Lsd unit; it’s not new.
    Nobody is buying brand new internal gears for the Lsd unit as parts are NLA.

    The newest Oem bmw 210mm clutch type diff would be 15 years old from a e39m5

    One can apply money/effort/time to make an 188mm handle 50+ passes down the 1320 at 1krwhp over.

    Or apply even more effort to build a 210 for more power.

    Many options ; for many a well setup 188 would do fine.
    The problem isn't the 188mm diff. Its the stub shafts. I never once broke a ring/pinion. But towed many many times for those little stub shafts. They can't handle dead hooking and they twist up like a stock driveshaft.
    Here is a 210mm vs 188mm stub shaft comparison. Even went and had DSS build me custom billet stub shafts. Broke them too. Until that is solved, the 188mm is no good for drag racing.

    I pulled the stubs out of my 210 when i parted the car out. Very slight, but still

    Before the days of chromolly aftermarket axles, drag and circle track racers used to pull the axles out of there rear ends and paint a white line down the center and then check them intermittently. When the shaft had twisted two full turns they would throw them away.

    Not sure what is the current status of Dss products for the 188mm as I have no association with dss;

    Back in the day circa 2012 iirc they had very durable stubs;
    You must mean these beautiful pieces of shit ? I went through 3 sets between myself and another turbo E36. Eventually DSS just refunded us.

    I found that the diff cover for the E46 M3 hit the E46 non-M rear sway bar. (I ended up having to convert both my front and rear sway bars to M3 pieces)

    I'm not sure the same situation exists for the E36....but it's something to be wary of.

    If you are going with an auto, 210mm and footbrake would be plenty. Why wouldn’t you rebuild the 210mm before failure?

    time isnt the issue, its price. there are a few folks already running the 8.8 in the e36 subframe. you just grab DSS axles to that length and your golden. It is fairly easy to swap in and now that 210s are more and more rare and costing more and more, this will be the Go to swap very soon.

    I agree that the 8.8 will probably become more popular as an upgrade. Makes a lot of sense if you can do the fab work yourself.

    34 spline options also... going to be a lot easier to find parts for the mustang diffs.

    i was speaking more towards the Cobra IRS 8.8s from the early 2000s. most used diff in the drag world when it comes to IRS.

    The new one “seems” to be a titch better. If ford is supporting it, maybe they have some confidence in what they have done. Building a cobra diff isn’t that cheap and quite frankly it doesn’t like 1000 rwhp drag strip launches. You can buy a built modern 8.8 for like $1800 complete. 3.31 and 3.55 are gonna be the ratios that work great with the TH400 conversions. Also with the 34 spline axle options, G Force should be able to build us some 1500 hp axles! No more Dss junk.
