my ST coilovers had clearance issues up front. probably only needed about 2-3mm, 5mm tops. I ran 15mm bc I had them on hand. Looks great actually.

The coilovers that may pose an issue with inner clearence are ones with helper springs. With GC's you will be fine.

Common practice and good one to follow is to replace the brake pins (sliders) when doing a brake overall. Yeah they are not that cheap but brakes are kind of important and not an area to skimp on cost.
    Just a suggestion

are they typically a wear item? I don't think I've ever seen one "fail"

Do they lose their shape or smoothness?

Inspecting, cleaning, and/or regreasing the caliper sliders and seals during a break job is plenty IMO, and is better treatment than 99% of cars get during a brake job.

    Ben,

BMW caliper sliders are not to be greased. Which was news to me, but I checked the Bently's as well and is specified not to have any grease applied.

At 95K, I'm not too concerned about the wear on the sliders in terms of failure. The seals, pistons, lines, boots, and bushings will hold me over for now. It is an easy thing to replace later if I feel it necissary.

Sorry, my general knowledge running into BMW-specific recommendations. Ignore the call to grease and thanks for learnin' me.

I hear you... don't tell anyone, but I too greased them until I originally posted that photo and was learned myself. I had greased my sliders on my 328 for the past 3 years prior to selling it. (shhh)

    Not True!
The rubber bushings can be lubricated with grease just not petroleum base grease. The petroleum base is the issue.
Using silicon based grease is fine and recommended, don't believe everything you read in Bentlys
You can get Pematex's at Pep Boys
    http://www.pepboys.com/product/details/9310177/00848/

Pin failure is rare but replace them when doing an brake overhaul and they are known good for another 100k miles
All metal fatigues after time, and even if they feel smooth they are likely to be pitted.

And why skimp when it comes to brakes?

Good to know, since my go-to grease is Mobile 1 synthetic axle grease. 99% sure that's petroleum-based. Well, ester-based? Petroleum-themed?!

    Hi, my name is Robb.

    I'm an addict...

I can't stop buying car parts.

Just snagged this off eBay... dunno what I'm going to swap/resell yet, but it had too many parts I wanted to replace to pass up.

    Nice score.

Let me know if you want to sell the piece I'd need to replace this bit with car phone mount holes.
I'm not sure if that would require the whole center console "chassis" though. It looks like it might?

Dibs on the A/C / Recirc switch if you decide to part with it. Mine is broken due to a supercharger incident.

Dangit Robb, I wanted that. Mainly for the gauges since two of mine are faulty. Let me know if you decide to part ways with the set of three.

Two of my faces are scratched up. I haven't tried to polish them yet, but these new ones look great, so I'd be willing to sell my old ones for a good price. Before his turns into a dibs thread for the console PM me if you're interested in any other items from it.

So fast the ac/recirc, gauges, shift boots, armrest/cupholder, rear switch mount and the console body are dubbed or I'm keeping.

Gauge mounting face and shift boot mounting face I may keep as well.

A simple shake down systems check run around the block after installation. Wasn't supposed to be a boost check, so the dog went with me. The dog rode the last bit of the short trip with his nose braced against the shifter, and front legs firmly wrapped around the console and my right leg. He didn't let go until the car was off, and hasn't gotten in that car since. The recirc button turned up cracked, I figure it happened during his sudden search for stability.

Not too horribly exciting of an update, but making forward progress still.

City light socket has been fitted. Still trying to source the plugs, if anyone has a lead on those.

Got the rear end all put together, need one of them stygar, or however you spell it, adjusters.

In the process of getting all this squared away, don't mind the mess in the background.

And these puppies are waiting for paint this afternoon, new ATE rebuild kits with the SS BimmerWorld pistons sitting behind the painting tape.

Front pistons I'm still waiting on a backorder, but will be done eventually when those arrive, for now they will have just the new lines, pads, and rotors. Parking brake is all set, verified my front wheels clear with no spacers (probably until I figure the sizes I need till the ACSs get done), then just have the headlights to sort out before and alignment and driving!!!! I can't wait for that last bit.

I've given up setting dates. The sooner the better is all I am shooting for now. Hard deadline is a car show on the 26th. Just sucks my race shop is so far away that I will likely trailor it there and need to find a ride to pick it up.

Cooked to perfection. Rear end MAY be complete this afternoon. Just have to rehang the exhaust, put together the calipers, and put in the fender liners.

    Console should be here Friday.

Hope you didn't bake them with the seals and all? Unless it is ok to do so, it just seems weird. Looks great nonetheless.

Brake fluid can deal with 400F or so.... the seals should be able to do the same.

It felt weird to bake the seals for a half second then I thought about it, and as Randy stated, the brakes can see significantly higher temps than 200* so I didn't see any "risk" of harming them.
