Holy cow. Thats some story.
I think mankind would be safer if you just buried that car at the bottom of the Marianas trench
Think I will keep it in the garage for a while just to be sure nothing else goes wrong. Will polish it every couple days, sit in it for my morning coffee, listen to my CS Lewis audio tapes. Maybe turn it on to get the a.c. running.
Phew, what a nightmare! Was wondering what happened to this attempt.
GL still watching as I'm sure many others are.

Will happily do that. Just have to get the car home. Kinda glad its been out of circulation. The wife and I have just brought our 2nd daughter home after a long stay at the local NICU. Scraping by on one income for the last 6 months.... having that money pit would not have worked. We moved from State College to Lititz PA for new jobs in the last 6 months and things are slowly settling down. Got a garage with this most recent move so things are certainly looking up.
I am very anxious to see the car to make sure its all buttoned down well.

Spoke to the mechanic over the weekend. Things are still looking good for a pick up on July 25. Going to be quite the trip. Though I am looking forward to it.

Will meet my father inlaw down there. He's travelling with me in convoy in his golf tdi. (not a standard gold tdi, 400 + ft/lb torque) to tow me if it craps its self........

Lurking patiently, fingers crossed man... It's a long time coming!
Thanks Sobek. Cant waite to get into the land yacht again.
The 7 is done and ready for pick up!
Quick stop in Virginia for a couple hrs sleep before the ride via 81 to Hendersonville NC.
Driving down in a souped up golf tdi with 400 plus ft/lb torque and 60+mpg! It will be quite a ride.
I had some finishing work done to the rear bumper, side skirts and front valance from a 2001 e38. They are in a silver slightly different tint to the chassis so have all been color matched to the body. New lights installed and the Pièce de résistance refurbed, custom tune M60 B40 installed and running and cooled by a zenith alloy rad.
Gonna find a spot for this aswell! http://www.ebay.com/itm/M60B40-4-0-V...-/251160996839

So guess who is driving seven hours back home with out their BMW?
I really cant express how I feel. I would get banned. Its a complex job I know squat about.
I left with a very clear agreement.
The car will be delivered free of charge to my home.
The car will be absolutely complete.
The car will have no engine codes/warning lights.
The good....... the car is running nice, except it looks like c3po without his coverings.
Computers, keys, dme, ews, engine and transmission all communicating.
To their credit they did offer a hotel o/night to get the car tomorrow afternoon.
I just dont have the time.
So driving 7 hrs back home in this...
I still have a chance to get it to Bimmer fest. If so you will find me with the licence plate "Albatros"

Has there ever been such a protracted tale of BMW woe?
I must have the record for longest non driving ownership of an e38 due to "shop delays".
At least I'm in the final stretch. Or am I?
I don't have any words mate, you've said em all. That being said, if your car had only been out of action for a month and this happened, it'd be "No big deal" but it's just the protracted nature of it all as you say. I'm not inclined to lose hope at this point haha.
Hang in there!!
Thanks Sobek. Ever the optomist :-D
What shop in Hendersonville?
Trevor
01 749i sporty, build 12/00 "Sports Barge",S62
92 VW Corrado VR6,AAA
81 Delorean,B28F
81 VW Rabbit Pickup 1.8T,AWW
03 VW Passat wagon 4.0 W8 6spd
I agreed with the shop to not mention it or the owner.
Important note.
This is a project car and I needed a shop that would take its time on this car. So thats what I got. I can pm anyone info on the shop but agreed with the owner to not mention his shop on this forum.
This I can say. I've known him for 9 years he's worked on three of my cars and they have all remained completely mechanically sound.

He did a great job pulling out all the garbage put in in Maine. In his words ..."he put in a blown engine with a busted, incorrect transmission"
He put together a comprehensive list I'll be submitting as my claim for $$$ recovery that will more than cover the cost of the conversion to the m60 b40.
wow, hard to find good work like this. good job!
I really lucked out with this engine aswell. First off it is a bmw factory warranty replacement. The e34 540i it was in had been rear ended and totalled a year after the engine was put in. Low miles to boot!
Looking at the numbers the m62 tu has it going on. But as many of us discovered..... unreliable.
Very happy to have the m60 with the renowned intake manifold and metal timing chain guides. I also had a custom tune put on that lifts the performance nicely. We'll see when I drive it.
At the shop I got to see the first start up after 12 years of storage. Quite the Smokey scene but it started first pop and after a few other short runs cleared out all the engine saving storage lubricants and purred!!!!!

I really hope he gets it up here this week so I can get to the Bimmer Fest. But I still have to get someone to cover my shift at the hospital ...........
Car is purring ...... but stuck in NC. Needs a current registration/stickers. Apparently there are camera's that ding out of state cars with shop plates.
Suck!!
So I enquired of my friendly Bmw engineer how the obd 2 port will read what he did seeing the computers now happily communicate with the m60 b40 rather than the m62tu b44........
"It will show everything the same except for the updated EWS with a different prod date & DME with two vin numbers & the M5_8_4_2 software with wort 79 removed"
Well I dont understand that but as it passes inspection im more than happy.
