Engine freshened up. Custom tune, rebuilt sport trans.
Have the older e38 lights on for now.
Picking it up next week. Broke a wisdom tooth and on vicodin until surgery next week. Vicodin and a 9hr drive..... not a good mix. Thankfully delta took the doctors note and gave me an open ended ticket to NC from State College.
Upset about missing bimmerfest east next week.... oh well.

Finally after nearly 2 years, three mechanics (the third actaully taking it on) my beleaguered 1999 740iL finally has an engine and rebuilt trans. The engine and trans from the first shop were complete garbage and I was absolutely taken. I had to fly and train to Portland, Maine from Philly and uhaul it back. uploadfromtaptalk1373827941675.jpguploadfromtaptalk1373828198955.jpgThe second shop couldnt figure it out. Wires everywhere broken bits and pieces made it clear I was completely ripped off. So off to NC and a great shop who also took on my 635 turbo. I ended up deciding on an M60 B40 Alusil warranty engine in a e34 540 after having no luck finding a good tu engine. $800.00 for the M60B40 engine and only 55k miles. The engineer had no issue with the obd2-obd1 set up and with a custom tune making similar hp to the tu. Also has a Zenith radiator installed brought from another forum user.
Why the earlier engine? No vanos issues, no timing chain issues, much lower cost. Went in awesome and looks stockuploadfromtaptalk1373827745071.jpguploadfromtaptalk1373828247639.jpg
Have a couple cosmetic things to fix..putting the original updated lights back in and a loose a/c control panel repair. Also installing color matched side skirts and rear valance. Will be installing these wheelsuploadfromtaptalk1373827663915.jpg which should look cool with the H&R springs.
Real happy to be getting it back though living vicariously through all the other e38 owners here has been awesome.
Thanks guys.

Where did you get it done?
Congrats on being back on the road. Smooth sailing on the highways to you.

i thought it was really difficult swapping obd2 to obd1
Thanks guys. A lot of opinions about this swap away from obd 2 & and the PIA tu motor. I did a lot of research and came to the conclusion with plans for long term ownership of the amazing e38 740iL the m60b40 will cost less to maintain and has some exciting possibilities for tuning. What I can say is that blocking diodes and a custom tune makes this an awesome sensible swap. I will pm details on the shop as I cannot fairly represent the engineer and won't get into armchair expert arguments about this.
I take it there's no emissions in your part of the country if they let you slip in OBD1 electronics into a car that had to be OBD2 compliant
Emissions compliance was one of my prerequisites. Dont have a clue how it was done but it passes using the obd2 port. Will get back to you if otherwise.
This is fantastic to see Daniel. I've been watching your progress over time and was pretty depressed at how you were treated. But I'm so glad you've finally got to this point AND got yourself a nice M60 to boot!
Turbocharge it some day, I hear the M60's are perfect for that hahaha
Thanks Sobek!! True it has been a ride. One thing that has been done is an inventory of all the garbage work done by the guy in Portland Maine.
I have several thousand to get back and now all the evidence documented by a licenced bmw tech.
For the mean time I want to enjoy finally getting my car before I go digging in the misery of getting money back from that turd.
Definitely won't turbo this car. Nitrous oxide ...... that'd be cool. Get a red led switch and all. Later..... much later. Have brakes and suspension to do plus decent rubber for the staggered set of wheels I have.

Why do you have 98 headlights with 99 fenders and corner light and why not just do a s62 swap?

When answering my questions please use a qualifier if you are not sure.
The more I work on this car the less I respect German engineering.

Trip down to NC held up by EWS problems. Had to buy a new one for the 740. My guru discovered the release circuit in the EWS had an interrmittant signal shutting of the injector pulse to the DME. The car would run fine then just shut down at random.
It was a pain having to provide licence and registration to the dealer in Ashville but it worked out. Wasn't to bad for $134.00 but delayed everything a week to Tuesday ..... darn it all.
good thread, how much did the engine swap run you? I'm in the same boat trying to figure out the best option.
740ILLIN
Engine was $800.00
Rebuilt trans $1200.00
About $2500.00 labour, parts, fluids. I do have a rather pricey aluminum zenith radiator but this will be many years running without plastic union failures.
So subtract the trans and radiator and you have a $3500.00 job. When I kicked off this endevour I had quotes of 2-3k not including the engine and that was for a used replacement at 2-3 thousand!!!! Even more with low miles or timing chain jobs done. The cost will really depend on what you want done and how fast you want it. (DUDMD did provide me with an excellent source for engines and has been a real great resource.) Love his 750iL!!!!!
I'm banking on the low mile alusil m60 b40 engine and the fact that it is not a vanos tu engine to keep the maintenence costs down.
Heaps of tuning options and I'm very happy with the custom tune its getting that puts the torque figures up with the m62 b44 vanos engine.
As mentioned earlier this is a emissions passable swap with a modified stock computer and different harness. I'm no mechanic and get lost whenever he's tried to explain how it was done.
Can pm you the mechanics details if you like.

That's awesome that you got it to work, and it runs fine. If you can PM where you get the engines from a link or anything, I'd like to check it out. Keep us update on your future mods to it

DUDMD got the list from somewhere. Think it was some engine/parts finder list. He'd have to point you in the right direction.
Excellent place to start.
So any still interested. .... another crazy story of delays. Engineer fell and broke his neck... yep. This car is cursed. I have owned it for 3 years. It has been at 4 shops from Maine to South Carolina for 30 months...... waiting for updates from my beleaguered mechanic.
Latest news......... new mechanic promises the car will be available before the end of July.
Plan is to take it to Bimmerfest in Maryland, which is very funny because the car has been at the shop since before the last Bimmerfest East. Im going this year if I have to push it! We'll see.

Another picture before the engine blew and it was shipped to Portland Maine then I rescued it from the dead beat mechanic hauling it back to another Mechanic in Philly who also couldn't fix it so it was shipped to NC where it is now. Diagnosed a blown engine installed and wiring nightmare......
Onward to the M60 B40 alusil warranty engine, zenith rad obd1-2 instal & things are rocking!
Until the mechanic in NC falls and breaks his neck then had other catastrophic family problems......... which takes us to today and a plan to have the car before Bimmerfest East.
Please join me in my hopes for this ill fated repowering that my 740iL albatros will return home after a three year drama.
