Has anyone thought of buying a 1 series 5-door in Mexico and register in CA?
What problems might arise from doing this? Do new cars from the Mexican market generally pass CA smog rules?

No, and not just because its ugly, but because if i were to go through the hassle of importing an out of country car it would not be a 1-series

Are we not able to get that exact model here in the US? Because one thing I do know is when you go to register it in CA your going to pay taxes on the vehicle. So you won't be making any smart tax evasive maneuvers by purchasing the car there. You have to ask yourself if you think it's really worth it or not to you.

About 8 years ago there was a 2004 2 door A3 with a Mexico plate at my school. So it can be done. How much it costs? Probably a lot.
