I was looking for any E36 as a driver, however with my budget capped at $3000, it is hard to find anything. I have seen fairly OK M's go for 5k or less. I would rather get an OK M for 5k that I can slowly work on, than drop 3k on a beater non M.
Let me know if you guys have anything. This will be my first BMW. Cosmetic stuff doesn't bother me, I am more worried about the mechanicals. I would like to either be able to drive it right away, or a small weekend job to have it up and running.
You can email me at evan(dot)madore(at)gmail(dot)com , since I can only have one PM.

I have one, an auto convertible m3, runs and drives perfect.
Your inbox is full. Clean it out and I'll send over some specs on my swap car that you may be interested in.
Spec, I was browsing the classifieds and your post was bookmarked. I would have to do some serious thinking on a convertible though. Living in CT, we get about 2 months that it is a good idea. This year, we haven't gotten one week without severe rain.
JRiggs, I emptied it out. I am only allowed to have one message at a time... If someone else messages me before you do, my email is evan.madore@gmail.com. Just send it all that way.
Thanks.
That is fine if it's all I can find. In the $3000 price range, all you get is 165k mile beat up 328i sedan that still needs a bunch of work.

Man Spec, I really wish your car wasn't a convertible. The condition and price are exactly what I am looking for.
I would reconsider buying a $5000 M3 unless you have significant additonal funds or income for the inevitable repairs and deferred maintenance that will come with a cheap M3. Better to buy a 328i in good shape than a salvage/rusted/beat M3. The performance difference between a 328i sport and an M3 is not that great. Good luck regardless.
Here is an example of a non-M e36 you can pick up for your budget;

Bout as good as you're gunna get for $5k man...
