Hey,
I am looking at a 2000 X5 4.4 with high mileage. What specifics should I be looking for when I test drive the car? Any help would be appreciated!
Please, do not get it. I learned the hard way today. I got a 2nd vehicle(2001 X5) with 131,000 miles on it. Found out today it needs a whole new tranny which is 9k. It does not show symptoms of a needing new one, only skips from 1st to 2nd but runs smooth otherwise. Also, it doesn't do it every time, maybe twice a day. The dealership said it was shot, but I somehow don't believe them so will be taking to a smaller mechanic to take a look. I have had a few other cars who needed a full replacement and this one does not resemble it in any way. I never received paperwork to what the problems were, but just that I needed one. My advice, stay away from high mileage!
Search a bit for common problems and you'll get a good idea. Get under the car and look at the cv boots before buyinh, a leaky boot is on its way out
The e39 540i is gone, awaiting the e60 m5, till then ill drive the wifes 05 x5 4.4i
I had new CV joint boots put on by my local mechanic only $80 each Perfect job. Get universals fitted. I have had 2 x 2001 X5 4.4,s no major problems but the one I have now only has 130K Kilometers on it which is probably only 80K miles. If there are no warning messages on the dash and it drives OK there shouldn't be a problem - check theres no cracking noise when you turn the steering full both ways, that's an indication of tie rod bushes gone.
