This thread FTW, great job Sir. Nice record of -real- M-Sport Tourings vs. all the 'my car has an M logo someplace so that makes it an M-sport'. Kewl and kudos.

I drove one of those 2003M Slate Green over Gray cars when shopping. It was not bad - the colors that is, the car itself was a pile of sh!t sadly. I would love to have had that instead of my all-silver/gray setup but car was a complete POS. Guy even gave me the 'please just make me any offer' and I couldn't even be interested in it for parts car.

Wow. Never actually seen the M-Cloth before. Points for being unique but I probably don't choose it myself, no offense. But interesting for sure.

Question was first asked here, so he's fine. But see the 528iT thread -- this was already answered. http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=2003274

Your car isn't an M Sport, it's just a Sport package. The M Sport is a specific option package. It was not available on the 528.

The S916 "Development vehicle w/out preservation" means that the car didn't have factory wax nothing else, the code for none development veihcles were S915 vehicle w/out preservation. Many more BMW development cars survives than other makes. I own one for example.

The numbers are wrong, there were 190 540iAT DR63 made with P337 M-Sportpaket of them 3 pre series cars and 11 Canadian versions.

    The Pre series cars:

    GN92237 449 Scheifergrün/N6TT Grau Leder
    GN92267 472 Sterlinggrau/N6SN Sandbeige Leder
    GN92320 472 Sterlinggrau/N6SW Schwarz Leder

They are probably a live and well either in the USA or in Germany.

    The Canadian cars:

    GN91958 Individual 416 Carbonschwarz/N6SW Schwarz Leder
    GN91959 Individual 416 Carbonschwarz/N6TT Grau Leder
    GN92105 354 Titansilber/N6SW Schwarz Leder
    GN92111 364 Topasblau/07SN Sandbeige Leder
    GN92266 472 Sterlinggrau/N6SW Schwarz Leder
    GN92323 668 Schwarz II/N6SW Schwarz Leder
    GN92542 364 Topasblau/N6SW Schwarz Leder
    GN92554 472 Sterlinggrau/N6SW Schwarz Leder
    GN92564 668 Schwarz II/N6SW Schwarz Leder
    GN92565 475 Black Sapphire/07SN Sandbeige Leder
    GN92633 472 Sterlinggrau/N6SW Schwarz Leder

For the European market there ONE 405 Imolarot II 540i/6 Touring made with M-Sport Package!

I have made the complete colour list of all 6speed 5serie with V8 can be found here, link to 540iT/6 E39 http://www.m5portal.com/forum/e39_54...ing_farger.asp

Here is 540i/6 E39 Limousine, in the list for North American version DN53 21 cars in 405 Imolarot II can be found. All were exported to Canada. http://www.m5portal.com/forum/e39_540i_farger.asp

The file is WRONG!! You have cars without M-Sport Package in the list and lack cars with. For example lacks GN92453 M Sport Package http://www.bmwarchiv.de/vin/gn92453.pdf

There were 2668 BMW 540iA Touring DR63 built, here are the model years:

    1999: 899 GN90000-GN90007 + GN90011-GN90901
    2000: 653 GN90910-GN91544 + GN91546-GN91563
    2001: 412 GN91545 + GN91564-GN91815 + GN91817-GN91975
    2002: 369 GN91816 + GN91976-GN92265 + GN92269-GN92319 + GN92321-GN92347
    2003: 335 GN92266-GN92268 + GN92320 + GN92348-GN92678

    GN90008-GN90010 and GN90902-GN90909 wasn't built.

I will rearrange the list, if someone wants I can send the Excel file with all the 2668 cars.

    Regards Stephan

This is with the understanding that some of the numbers might not have been assigned to a vehicle.

The 754 does not align with data I sourced from this forum back in 2011 which indicated 5,780 528iT's came to the US.

Summary of E39 Wagon Sales in U.S.

    E39 BMW 540iT
    1999: 879
    2000: 447
    2001: 406
    2002: 370
    2003: 261
    5-year total for 540iT: 2,363

    E39 BMW 528iT
    1999: 4,068
    2000: 1,712
    2001: -0-
    2002: -0-
    2003: -0-
    5-year total for 528iT: 5,780

    E39 BMW 525iT
    1999: -0-
    2000: 359
    2001: 2,216
    2002: 1,696
    2003: 1,187
    5-year total for 525iT: 5,458

    5-year total for all E39 Wagons: 13,601

During the same period, about 181,500 E39 sedans were sold in the U.S., including roughly 10,000 M5's and 26,700 540i's.

What I did find is that the first three 528iT's were coded as "Development vehicle w/out preservation". I have no idea what that means, but believe that these would have been the cars covered in graphics to mislead the press. The next three cars (BR95005-BR95007) were coded as "Press Vehicles". BR95008 was the first car without either coding. I'm assuming that 008 is the first car that was sold to the public. My car is BR95005, which I believe makes it the first car with out any disguise and available as a press vehicle. I was told that BMW NA was the first owner of the vehicle and sold to owner #2 twelve months later.

If my car is in fact the first post development vehicle, that must make it worth an additional $10.00 on the used car market!

If anyone has a 528iT whose VIN is something other than BR95000-BR95754, please let me know so I can try to find the other 5,000 cars.

    Thus my research will continue.

BMW only offered 13 Exterior colors for the 5 series sport wagons in 2003; White, Blacks, Greys, Silvers, Blues, Greens, and one Beige. Some of these may have only been available on the 525iT. I do not know for certain.

There were three colors in the red family available in 2001.
Mine was a press vehicle, 528it manual sport in oxford green with a tin top. VIN ends in BR95375. Option S902A Special inspection press vehicles

I'd also like to add that he is nearly correct with the figure of 754 vehicles, however, in a different way. My search has concluded that there were 740 manual transmission 528iT models made for the US.

These vehicles ranged from BR95000 (02/98) to BR95754 (08/00). There are gaps from BR95361 to BR95374 as well as BR95002.

I've made a sheet the runs the VIN in a list so you basically start with the first serial number in a series you want to review and it gives basic data about every number in the sequence.

More digging revealed that for the 525iT, only 570 manuals were produced in the USA. GD50000-GD50569.

Well, you don't have to be so dramatic about it! I apparently failed to transcribe one of them -- I said that might happen -- and I didn't include the pre-prod cars or the ones that were not '03s as they were obviously for another market. But thanks for double checking the work, accuracy is good.

This is very interesting. So I am incorrect if I were to refer to my car as having the M-Sport package or being an M-Sport? Which I don't do but am tempted to. What are the actual differences? Is my car optioned exactly the same as a 2003 M-Sport?
    Thx.

Your car is an '02 with the Sport package, so no, it's not the same. The M Sport package was available only in '03 in the US and came with M-like front and rear bumpers, a different muffler, different wheels, slightly different suspension tuning, a black headliner, and even more M logos.

Ah, thank you. Love my Sport Wagon anyway! I can just buy a bunch of "M" stickers on-line and plaster them everywhere, that will work, right?
    Hehehe!

Josh you did an awesome job! Thanks for dong the hard part! Compiling!

I ended up buying GN92398 ... Alpine White with Biege interior. Loaded. Clean Title. But slightly wrecked. I love the rarity of these cars! 1 of 11 in my color combo! Stoked!!

I really want to be able to run the option code VINs and analyze the scarcity of various colors, option packs, and drive trains.

I don't have XML access to any option code VIN databases, but, if someone does, I can make a really pretty presentation for the E39 series. It's not worth the time if I have to pull each VIN record individually.

Someone should start a registry. One for tourings in general, then M sport/sport package.

Like I mentioned above, I can create an artificial database of all the various packages and examine the rarity of various options among different models.

I wish my interior was black, and may someday change it, but otherwise I love my genuine 2003 540iTA M-sport. Just about to hit 83K miles. Second owner, picked up from Cali via CPO program in 2006 and have been enjoying it ever since. Just completed $1800 worth of suspension and steering refresh work along with an M5 steering box. Probably going with Ground Control coilovers soon (has full Dinan Stage 3 now, but too soft for me) and a VF supercharger maybe. Then I may sell my '01 M5 (it only has 58K on it).

A guy I see around town every few months keeps offering me $15k cash to buy it but there is no way I would sell it. I can't replace it even for $25k.

Besides suspension I have Dinan engine and trans programming, Euro dash, 18x9.5 wheels, M5 brakes, and a few other goodies. For those of you die-hard touring fans, my license plate has a triple meaning. Can you guess all 3?

I don't care in 2014, but back in 2006 I wanted factory nav and you would not believe how hard it was to find a 540iT with both M-sport AND navigation. I think < 1/3 of the M-sport cars had it.

Brian, I love your IT-Msport!! Sooo ... "it hauls" "iT Hauls" and your an Information Technologies guy:"I.T. hauls" ????

Only 10 imported Saphire Black/Beige. If it's highly opted I wouldn't change that interior. Bolt Ons are one thing. Interior is a PiTA!! I'd leave that Stock and do the VF Supercharger with the Dinan tune.

Us SAn Francisco Bay Area BMW guys have the luxury of having Dinan right here in Morgan Hill, CA. Those guys can't wait to get their hands on my Alpine White 540iT M. Haha.

The manual 528iT's are only marginally less rare than 540iT M-sports.

    7.12% of 540iT's are M-Sports.
    11.59% of 528iT's are manuals.
    8.95% of 525iT's are manuals.

Great news, everyone! Just got off the phone with Ground Control and placed my order for a front suspension. Camber plates and coilovers with adjustable Konis and ride height. They will have to come up with something custom for a top-adjustable rear mount Koni but will work on it later. I need the fronts ASAP because the car is all apart right now and I can easily install fronts before alignment (pic below)

It's fully optioned except heated steering wheel.Still not sure if that was even available here in the colonies or not. I think it has every other possible option. I did add the Euro dash which is amazing, but other than that the interior is still stock except for a light window tinting.

    It hauls ass
    It hauls stuff
iT for "touring" in BMW speak

I found a guy on M5board selling lower front grilles with an opening for the brake ducts. Since I removed the T-bar and installed the M5 lower front grille I have noticed slightly decreased braking in the dry and significantly decreased in the wet (I have M5 front calipers and rotors on it along with steel lines). I think opening those back up like they were originally will help. Plus it looks good that way.

Now, my M5 and my touring both have failed headlight adjusters on the driver's side. I don't think they are repairable but I can't swallow $700/assembly so I zip tied them up for now. They won't self adjust though. Kind of upsetting.

After steering and suspension are all done I will wait some time, shake it down, and then work on supercharger and eventually valve cover gaskets as well as the timing chain at some point.

    Brian:

I think there you could expand the third meaning. The first thing I noticed was the red "5" tag in the corner, so without the 540 plaque, I knew it was a Five series, and the I saw the "IT" and knew it was an "injected touring".............

    Josh:
I was not aware of the change in muffler. The '03 Factory Brochure does indicate that there are titanium rings on the instrument panel gauges included in the Sport Package. The brochure also indicates that the 540i Sport Wagon came with: A. Performance rear axle ratio (3:15) and torque converter and B. One Touch Starting as a standard options under the Performance and efficiency heading. These options were not available for the 525iT.

What is One Touch Starting? The brochure has no information on that feature.

One-touch starting works with automatic transmissions. Rather than having to hold the key in the "start" position until it fires, you just have to quickly touch the start position and it will keep turning over on its own until it catches. Lots of new cars do this these days.

All of the 540iTs had 3.15:1 gear ratios.

I think the only difference in the mufflers might have been the larger tailpipe. The muffler itself might be the same, I don't know.
