pre-engaged? Never heard of that. And mine sure wasn't and so isn't the one I replaced it with.
That just means you don't understand the use of the terms. It's pretty common.
Pre-engaged means it engages the pinion before turning. Bendix is helical and the spinning throws the pinion into the flywheel already spinning. They look completely different.
