LoL guys. The Z4M (now known as Megan) is staying stock. I said the same thing about the rocketship too at one time, seven years ago. So yeah, about that.
It is picture day now that picasa decided to cooperate ...
First picture before teardown:
The poo chutes:
Open gate before sending to be coated:
Appropriate sized wheels:
Dropping the engine out:
Engine out:
My castle:
The old snail (which is looking for a new home):
Blew out the exhaust manifold gasket:
My garage buddy, Beau:
A failed exhaust gasket is a good excuse for an upgrade. I know someone looking for a spa7000m too, that is if it is going to be replaced with more goodness?
WOT
These are pictures from the last year of building it up. HAHA. You are seeing historic pictures now. I don't think there's any upgrades necessary. I do have a bunch of tunes and extra turbo parts around that I'll be listing for sale one of these days.

Hmm, something doesn't look right here:
Headgasket sealed good this time:

Do you smell death?:
It's like Kanye:
Broke, broke, broke, phi, broke:
Scratchy walls:
And some deposits:
All the turbo stuff ready to head for ceramic coating:
Time to share the failure details?
Sure - failure was caused by excessive piston rock. The pistons I was sold by a vendor I heavily trusted were not properly designed for a small bore engine with S52 crank. All it takes is one sliver of material to start the domino effect of failure. All pistons showed the same wear. Piston #1 was the worst, but they would have all failed in time. The pictures, above, tell the story pretty well.

Showshoe:
Installed a new head unit during the waiting game:
Chilling in the garage broken:
Properly sized tires:
New piston (left) v. old, wrong, piston (right). Notice how much beefier the new ones are:
New, solid AKG engine mounts:
The paperweight holding the garage down:
Fuel pump carrier w/ dual pumps:
Final dis-assembly of old engine:
New short block ready at Don's:
How do you like those akg mounts? I just put the same ones in my car, I like that meaty stance too, car looks like it can walk the walk.
so, are those pistons are from the engine that you blew at the strip? the one that you showed us all the pics with coolant in the bore?
Old pistons are from TRM?
Old set up: 520RWHP & 500RWTQ @ 20PSI 1/4 mile as of 7/26/15 12.5 @ 125MPH - 19PSI
New set up: Steedspeed Twinscroll, Wiseco Pistons 8.8:1 CR, K1 Rods, Blueprinted and Balanced, ARP Main Studs, o-ring block, GTR 12mm head studs, GT35R with 86mm HTA billet compressor wheel (GT3586RHTA) TwinScrol 1.06 exhaust housing, Nick G custom tuning, 6 Speed Transmission, UUC Twin Disc Clutch, UUC EVO III, UUC DSSR 109mm, EVO 6 Speed Driveshaft, HFS-6 W/M injection, Zeitronix data logger, 3" SS full exhaust, Rallyroad strut bar, X brace, Race coilovers.
So far, so good. They are noisy, but that's to be expected when you are replacing a rubber part with a practically solid one.
And thanks! That's the first time that I heard "stance" without wanting to puke - LoL.

Correct. It only took coolant to Cyl 6 at that time. Pistons were checked and determined suitable for use.

After seeing an appropriate piston, there's no comparison. It looks to me (uneducated) that these were intended for a road race application. There are some lightweight tricks done to them that doesn't do well for a FI application. I also have my doubts they were actually designed for a S52 stroke also. The skirts were simply too short for bore stabilization of the piston - notice how much longer the new pistons are. Now, these pistons were probably fine for 400-500whp, who knows. But they rocked like a mofo at real power levels which lead to the destruction.
It is water under the bridge now - but a very costly learning experience. These type experiences are exactly why I tend to trust no-one. Hence my "trust issues" comments. Let's just call it a several thousand dollar learning experience.
maybe I missed it, but who supplied the new pistons?
Bottom of short block:
Oil pump internals:
Oil pump installed:
Oil pan going back on:
Another oil pan shot:
Head gasket on with special sauce:
Parts back from the coater:
This is a hiccup I ran into - the S52 water pipe does not fit the M52 timing cover. To this point I was using the S52 cover, but it was decked to match the other block so I couldn't reuse:
Have to take off about 2mm for it to fit and use custom o-rings:
This time I didn't mess around with leaking gaskets:

Don V via Wiseco. I'll try to find out what vendor, etc. for you. It was a long ass wait for them because they weren't "off the shelf".
My pistons took a bit to get here too as they were not standard....
Glad you got everything sorted out though, although not in the way anyone would prefer.
Happy boosting sir, glad to see Mindy continuing to run properly!

We need some acceleration videos of this thing at 32 psi, stat! Stop launching it and breaking everything in sight
