    DIY wiring info for aftermarket radio

    Putting an aftermarket radio into your E38? This might help. This info was taken from a 2000 E38 which originally had the 4:3 nav radio.

    Ground = Brown
    Yellow +12V constant = Red w/ green stripe
    Red +12V switched = Purple w/ red stripe
    Dimmer = Gray w/ red stripe

    For steering wheels controls you will need a PAC SWI module. You will connect the pink wire from the module to the white w/ yellow dots wire from the car.

    For FM antenna, you will need a Metra 40-VW10 adapter and either a 12' antenna extender Metra 44-EC144 or 17' antenna extender 44-EC204. You will run the the antenna extender from your radio into the trunk. In the drivers side corner of the trunk where the OEM equipment sits you will find the gray antenna cable w/ euro connector. Use the 40-VW10 and connect it between the factory cable and the Metra extender.

    Thanks for this +1!

    This may sound foreign but when you replace the stock head unit it becomes REALLY IMPORTANT.

    any idea what the plug type is on the end of the Metra 40-VW10 lead that goes into the factory bmw antenna amp box is called?

    As the leads dont seem to exsit in the UK, and would be easier and cheeper to make my own up.

    cheers

    I don't know the answer to your question. It's a euro style connection is all I know.

    Where is the white w/ yellow dot wire on a 98 (pre-facelift)?

    All of them.
    Its in the main plug behind the radio. I had to splice into it. The antenna info is super helpful, I was wondering why mine didnt work.

    Also, I used the axxcess steering wheel module, its much faster than the pac sw1.

    So you only plug in one wire from the module? Aka pink one?
