Aftermarket Crankshaft Position Sensor Options (CPS: 12141720307)

I need to replace both crankshaft speed sensors on my M70, the BMW part number is 12141720307 and is #14 in the diagram below:

My local BMW dealer wants $102 for each sensor.
AutoHausAZ and some other car parts retailers list an M70-compatible aftermarket CPS branded as FACET for $44 each, which is a significant cost saving over the BMW one.

Does anyone have any experience with CPS sensors from FACET? Any input? Thanks in advance.

I've already read this thread, but wanted some of your guys' opinions.

Ebmwparts.com has them for $61.27 each. They are a real bmw dealer and you Will get OEM. Great communication too. They are my go to for everything now.

    I miss my E31!!!!!!!!!!
I bought mine from my local dealer at $72.95 each. Surprisingly the Pulse Generators (PN: 12-12-1-725-023) were also $72.95 each. I replaced them in pairs.

I just replaced these on my car a month ago, and I will tell you this.... you do not want to do this twice.

I think the whole job took me about 2-3 hours, and you need to be under and above the car, so make sure you have a good place to do this.

I would not go cheap on these and have to do it again in a year or so so I went OEM, I got both of them for about $300, and that was with a good discount.

Are you sure they are broken though?
mine was covered in a thick coat of grime, so thick I'm actually not sure they were broken, sadly you might have to remove them to clean them unless you can get something in there somehow.

I have purchased a couple of sets from AutohhausAZ, and have never had a problem with them. In fact, there is a new set going into the Alpina shortly.

As with many things on the V12, it is not the actual sensor that goes bad, but the wire. They get hot and become brittle, but by looking at them from the outside you would never notice it.

Hey Mike, at the price Faisal mentions I would just go with OEM. I'm curious as to why the price hike...i got mine some time ago at $60 bux from Charlie @ Gault BMW

Same here...I have a set from AutoHauz. No issues. One of them was easy to change with only removing the fan IIRC. The lower one required some time.

Thanks for your responses. With two confirmed succeses (rogbmw and thelongeride) of the FACET CPS sensors from AutoHausAZ, I'm going to purchase a set. The cost savings is worth giving it a shot. I'll follow-up in a few months and let you know how they work for me.

So I finally got the FACET CPS sensors installed two weeks ago and they work perfectly fine. Even at 100,102k miles, my original sensors were still functioning fine. It may be placebo effect but I did notice a minor increase in engine smoothness.

Bottom line: I highly recommend the FACET units!

Replacing the bottom one was a pain, because the book procedure probably calls for removing the power steering pump. I was able to do it by removing all but one of the power steering pump mounting bolts and then "rotating" the entire pump on that one bolt that was left on (and inaccessible unless you remove the pulley), to clear the way to remove the old CPS sensor.

Just wondering... why did you need to replace them? Was it preventative maintenance?

Facet and Vemo make all kinds of sensor parts for BMW. But I dont know who the OEM supplier was for this part.

My car would go into limp home mode when at highway speeds and would not shift into lower gears from there and even stopping and starting the car again only worked for a few kms before it happened again

Yes, for me was preventative maintenance. The 8 is my only car so I need to depend on it. So far she hasn't let me down, but then again I've rebuilt most of the critical systems.

Did anyone notice that the replacement sensors were shorter on top. The part that went into the housing was the same as the old ones. i'm wondering if they did that so that they were easier to install. I cut the old one out and I was able to slip the new one in without moving the power steering pump.

What is your experience with the FACET CPS after 5 years?
Asking for experience of M70 drivers with brand of crankshaft position sensors. Had a look what is available: There we have the OEM from BMW 12141720291 ,Facet 90057, Vemo 20720422 and some other minor players as per the internet like HAVAM 1953057,LUCAS ELECTRICAL SEB1196, MEAT & DORIA 90057, MEYLE 3148990026, SEIM CP120, STANDARD 18809 , STANDARD CS1147
I am using still the original BMW ones, no problems, just in case I need new ones, I would like to be on the save side, CPS are important. Let's say the BMW list price is 100%, the aftermarket ones cost about 40% or even less/piece

    Hi shogun,

I just happened to log into this site today after a long time. So a lot of things happened in my life, like getting married and getting 4 other cars to take care of so I don't have much time for the 8 as I would like.

Although I don't drive the 8 nearly as much as I used to, the Facet branded CPS sensors are still working perfectly fine.
