I may find a good vendor of cables & adapters, order a bunch, and have them on hand for anyone interested in purchasing something that they know will work.
    S54 swap DME flashing - $100
S54 swap CAN interface board (for proper A/C & check engine light) - $275
e36 SAP sim/secondary air pump simulator:
    $75 - standard or $170 - plug & play
    e36 post-cat O2 sims: $115 shipped, plug & play

Not a bad idea actually, think there would the a lot of interest. The most frustrating part is finding the right cable to buy.

The 20 pin was fine. It was recomended that I solder 7&8 together, on the obd cable, and reprogram it, which I did. I was told it would work better on newer vehicles.

I have a 98 so perhaps I will not need to do the mod on 7/8 pin

What does the reprogramming entail? Like this is software side programming I guess? I have a 1998 528i so I am hoping I don't need to change anything. Wishful thinking I guess.

The programming is mostly for inverting the 12v signal from always off to always on. That way the programs see voltage "ON". It is only useful for programming and sometimes coding modules.

Even if you need to program the cable, it is extremely easy and uses freeware software. I have clear detailed instructions here http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh...xperimentation .

I finally have my cable and 20-pin adapter. I can't wait to get home to get working on this stuff. I .not sure how much I can get done tonight but I would love to be able to diagnose my issues today tho.

I will download the software first and the mod the cable if needed (still unsure if it is) then try things out. Longest 2 weeks ever. I sure hope I can get my baby running again.

If anyone has tips regarding software setup and cable mod let me know. I am pretty good with computers so it should not be too tough.

There is no need to reprogram the cable for EWS sync via the app in this thread.

Even better. Now will this app tell me what is wrong between the key / EWS / DME.

I am finally off work so I am now going to dig in. I guess I will soon see what it can do

Ok, So I followed the instructions in the recommended thread and got all programs installed. I have downloaded the EWS sync software from this thread and installed it. So here is my question, before trying to sync my DME & EWS I need to confirm that it is indeed that problem as to why I am not getting spark & fuel. I need to verify if it is a problem between the key chip to EWS or EWS to DME. What software is best recommended for this diagnostic. From what I understand EWS Sync does not do this role..

Use inpa for diagnosis. You need to be connected under the hood.

Go to the e39 section, (or shift +f6) to old section and choose e39. Begin with the engine. If it is the single vanos engine (*very important to know!) Then you choose MS41.1. If it is the dual vanos, choose MS42. Read errors.

Also go through the e39 section and in the Body section find Electronic Vehicle Immobilization EWS and run errors for that.

My EWS sync app probably won't work for MS42.

Well I actually just ran your tool and it says EWS sync successful... However I am not able to start. I am still getting this error in INPA:
    ISN number: ERROR_ECU_REJECTED
    password: ERROR_ECU_REJECTED

I'm going to keep digging for info in INPA. INPA also complains about a language mismatch and some pages are geman. You software run great. I'm thinking my problem is not a sync issue.

    I am single Vanos BTW.

    Thanks,

That's how INPA is, those variant mismatches are no problem.

So you are saying that those ERROR_EWS_REJECTED codes are not an issue? Does this mean I am out of sync?

No, definitely not that one. Just the language variants and some german here and there.

What errors do you get when you run Inpa errors on MS41.1 profile? Like go in MS41.1, then press F4 (errors) then read errors.

Also just making sure, you have to have the key in full ignition and with engine off. Also connected under the hood.

EWS Signal is missing or corrupt. Yes, good idea to post that in the E39 section.

One of a few things: Key reader is broken, connection to ews is bad (less likely since you are successfully running diagnostics on it), or ews module is bad (haven't seen or heard of that one before).

Sorry if I jacked the thread. I never intended to do so. Apparently sync issue is not my problem. Most likely key transponder is bad. Also my EWS3 is running in EWS2 mode and I am learning what that means but I think it means no rolling codes.

Your software installed and ran great on my car. I will share the link to the thread.
