Would this program work on a Z3 (which is an E36) with MS41.1 & EWS 3D?

It won't touch your tune. EWS sync reads the ISN from the DME and writes it to your EWS.

You have to use the 20pin port to reach EWS.

Can you confirm if it will work for a 98 e39. Need to align EWS and DME. Also can you confirm the other posters question about the correct cable and and 20pin adapter? There are so many out there to choose. Also some said the 20 adapter are not all the same due to an ignition pin...? Also is Vagcom cable the same as a BMW ODBII cable the BMW ones are like $50 so what is the difference?

E39 528 or 540? Should work on a 528, not sure about 540. I'd get any cheap vagcom cable & 20 pin adapter then correct the adapter pinouts if necessary.

It is a 1998 528i. What exactly needs to be modified on the cable? Will this modified cable work with other software too like INPA, DIS, etc.? I know I need the 20pin adapter also but are these all created equal? I read about battery and ignition reading etc. Just wondered if Vagcom has an impact on this. I am anxious to order a cable but wanna get the correct one.

If it is the single vanos 2.8 in that 528, then I would purchase these:

www.ebay.com/itm/291494545441 quality VAG KKL cable with quality FTDI chip or http://www.ebay.com/itm/271928532534 (another seller)

    and

    www.ebay.com/itm/111222866460 20-pin adapter

These ftdi chip cables will be very good for diagnosing as well for EWS sync, programming, coding... for any car 2006 and older.

Do not buy the cable with the CH340 chip, even if it is cheaper.

Wow this is really helpful. Now you mentioned I may have to modify the cable once it arrives... Would you be kind enough to elaborate?

Look through here http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh...xperimentation for all the modification info, drivers, and how to use with INPA. Applies equally to Z3 and your car as well.

Awesome, so before I order, can you tell me if there is something different or better with this one other than price much higher?

Well, I cannot fully answer that because I have never used that cable, nor would I spend the money on it.

The FT232BL chip cables work differently. This one might even have a genuine FTDI chip... or maybe it's just another Chinese replica making big money for someone.

Why I chose to recommend the above:

The kind of cable I linked you has been my go to for diagnosing (INPA and ISTA, a little bit of DIS), EWS Sync with this thread's program, MS41 ecu flashing and tuning, coding, and programming since around 2010 when I bought it, for all BMWs older than 2007. That includes a few cars older than 1996, a Euro E36 323i I used to own, and a bunch of other cars I help people with.

It's simply what worked for me, it has done everything I tried to do with it.

I would love to experiment with the BL cable, but I have too many other cables in my collection... K+DCAN, RossTech's VCDS Hex+Can, VAGCOM clone with CH340, TinyADS, a few programmers, MPPS v13, Galletto, Carsoft, and a few generic OBD2 ELM cables I first experimented with a long time ago.

Constantly wanting to buy more diagnostic cables/ things to tweak. For instance, now I want to get a VW/Audi ODIS interface. I'm not in automotive or computer career at all, but I love tinkering. Also I cannot trust most mechanics, so I try to learn it myself.

But the "I have a problem" was a little tongue-in-cheek because I really enjoy car diagnostics and repair, but as a hobby.
