The link and instructions are literally on the first post... You don't need to read through the thread.

You can use any USB diagnostics cable with FTDI chip. It doesn't have to be a VAGCOM cable. It can be the usual INPA K+DCAN cable attached to your 20-pin adapter.

And yes it works. It's very simple.

I'm having an odd misfire error above 4psi of boost on my '97 540 I turbocharged. M5.2 DME, with a very decent tune in it at this point, so I don't think the tune is the fault. I think it looks like I should be able to install one of my spare DMEs with matching part number to the original, and use this program to sync the new DME to my existing EWS, correct?

If so, I will probably give it a try. Then I'll flash in my current partial tune to the new DME, and see if the problem persists. There is no way to do this sync of the new DME to the old EWS with just INPA, is there? I'm obviously confused on this, haha...

The early M5.2 (88-pin) dmes should work with the ewssync.exe application, and INPA as well.

Does anyone know if this program works with E34 M5 1995?

Are there any plans to make a version that works with newer EWS versions, like in the E46 series cars ?

No, newer DMEs do not let you re-sync to a new EWS repeatedly.
    S54 swap DME flashing - $100
S54 swap CAN interface board (for proper A/C & check engine light) - $275
e36 SAP sim/secondary air pump simulator:
    $75 - standard or $170 - plug & play
    e36 post-cat O2 sims: $115 shipped, plug & play

Oh i didn't realise there was a limit. I am sure you can write the ISN with INPA, by manually typing it in.

Is the DME's EWS sync limit linked to the DME software write limit count ?

It isn't a limit, they are paired once and I don't think you can "virginize" the DME via k-line. Here is some info on MSS54 - http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=528013

I just purchased a complete lock set for a 1997 BMW Z3 that I am restoring. The seller included the ignition key and EWS unit. He told me that the EWS is plug and play. Everything that I have read says that the EWS unit needs to be aligned to the DME. Two Questions: In my case, Does the EWS need to be aligned to the DME? If so, will this program do the trick? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Yes, you need to align DME to this new ews.
This program will do it. You need the usb cable and 20-pin adapter. All done under the hood.

Wow! I finally got it to work! Used the same cable I use with GT1 and Windows 8 64-bit. Thank you soooo much 328_Power_04 for this wonderful program.

Can anyone confirm where the EWS module is on a 1997 Z3? For some reason I thought it was behind the glove box but no go. Before I go ripping apart the drivers side dash, confirmation that it is there would be great. Thank you!

Never mind! It's behind the glove box. I didn't realize that I had to rip the whole thing out.

Thanks a million gpeterson!!! $12 cables, $45 lock set and your program allowed my Z3 to have one key and an ignition that actually works. Priceless!!!!

    Quick question,

I bought a tuned dme and want to replace my stock one. (USDM E36 M3 MS41.1)

If let's say it doesn't work and it doesn't write correctly or doesn't write at all, will putting back stock DME work. Don't want to brake anything and not be able to go back to stock.

    Thanks

Edit: went through the 12 pages, I'd have to re-sync to get the original dme to work.

    Thanks

If it doesn't work (likely due to cable or wiring issue) the EWS will still be paired with your old DME. If it does work it should work just as well to re-sync with your old DME. The risk here is pretty low.

If you are paranoid you have have EWS deleted from the tuned DME. That would let you switch back and fourth without doing anything.

Im a bit paranoid, I just dont want to end up with a bricked tuned dme and a ews that wont work with my original dme.

Worst case I delete the ews

Also is there a better cable you would recommend ? I have a vagcom hex-v2, the cable used with eurodyne and the one from rk tuning.

That should be fine. Just keep in mind you need an adapter and must use the 20-pin port under the hood. The OBD2 connector under the dash is not wired to the EWS.

You can safely test your cable and DME communication by reading the ISN from the DME.
