I'm making great progress on a standalone windows application that will allow you to sync EWS using your PC, a $10 vagcom cable, $5 OBD2 to BMW 20-pin adapter. It is a standalone application that does not require installation of EDIABAS/INPA/DIS/VMWare, etc. and should be very easy to use.
It works on MS41.x (OBD2 e36/e39 6cyl cars) and will likely not work on others.

I can order the cable and adapter and be ready to test it as soon as they arrive.
It is working on my car with 2 different DMEs! It is a bit rough:
-no error handling (may crash if something unexpected happens)
-serial operations run on UI thread (may appear to hang for few seconds)
-requires .NET Framework 2.0
Usage:
-connect your vagcom cable to your PC and car via BMW 20-pin adapter
-turn ignition on
-run app
-select COM port that corresponds to your vagcom cable
-press "Read ISN from DME"... if successful you will see the ISN listed and the "Write ISN to EWS" button will be enabled
-press "Write ISN to EWS"... if successful it will tell you to turn off ignition for 15 sec
It would be great if someone could give it a try. I accept no responsibility if it leaves you with un-synced EWS, so please do so at your own risk. It would be nice if testers already had un-synced EWS (nothing to lose) and/or already have other tools to sync EWS in case my app doesn't work. Once others have confirmed it works well I'll make it a bit more polished.

Both of my cables have tracking that puts them here on Thursday.
You say the computer needs to have .NET Framework 2.0.
My Windows 7 program list says I have "Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile version 4.0.30319."
Will this work, or do I need to track down 2.0?
Thanks for the software.

can't wait to try it out!
My cables arrived.
On the first try, the program didn't find my COM port. I shut the program and started it again and it found it.
The program said it worked- I pushed the first button and it found ba7 as the ISN code.
I pushed the second button and it wrote it to the EWS.
It prompted me to turn the ignition key off for 15 seconds.
I turned the key off, disconnected my cable and put the port cover back on.
A few minutes later I turned the key and I hear no starter.
I repeated with the same results.
Since I just put this engine in, it could be something else- but I have no idea what it could be.

Hmm... could be many things. You can always setup INPA & use it to read & clear DME errors & try again. I can't remember the specifics of the DME error when EWS is out of sync, but if you see it you will know what it is.
If you don't get INPA setup I can probably tweak the app tomorrow so that it will tell you if EWS is in sync.
Just to make sure... is your key and EWS module the same ones that were on the car and known to work?

Yep. I tried it with the two keys which came with the car. I also tried locking and unlocking the driver's door a few times because I saw mention of that in the EWS document I had read.
Will INPA work with this cable setup? Is it something I can download? This is my first OBDII experience, so I know very little about this end of it.

The sync-checker would be an awesome addition, too. Thanks!
