Did front control arms, ball joints, urethane bushings instead of rubber last weekend, did the fuel filter yesterday. It was definitely overdue. :-(
Finally got a chance to do a compression test. Anyone have an engine for sale?
Numbers are for dry. Haven't had a chance to do a wet test.

Today I tried to diagnose if my oil leak is the power steering or the engine.
Tips?
Are you having to add power steering fluid? If not, it's probably engine oil. The oil filter housing gasket is a common item that can leak a lot of oil. The large hose from the power steering resovoir to the pump is a common place to lose fluid. If it's leaking, remove the hose from the pump, cut about 3/4" off and reclamp it to the pump. This should resolve it.
Thanks for the tip on the filter.
I picked the car up Saturday, craigslist buy of an 02 325i, and noticed it was dripping oil in the drive. So I looked underneath and the skid pans are coated. Hell, no idea of its origin. So today I washed everything up nicely and I'll keep an eye on it. Fluid looks like engine oil, but after blending with road grime I'm not sure ATF would look much different.
This thread may be of help (common oil/coolant/fluid leaks thread with photos): http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=882732.
Edit: just saw your reply above come through, and I agree with SilverSaloon that a likely culprit is your OFHG.

Changed the OFHG. NIce project, and it definitely needed it.
Picked up an //M hood. Now just have to have it painted along with the hardtop and side skirts. Man, this is going to cost quite a bit.

Replaced the rack boots and control arm bushings--nice the steering wheel doesn't twitch a bit in my hands any more when I apply the brakes.

Changed the oil, replaced the oil sensor, new coolant, replaced the ATM thermostat. 80 miles later, no leaks, no coolant light, no oil light. all good.
noticed car had an oil leak. Bought the car with 145xxx and I suspect none of the gaskets in the car have been replaced yet. Car has reached 155xxx so I decided to replace the valve cover gasket on my 01 330i cause I saw there was burnt oil on the metal plates on the passenger side of the engine. Next on the list, OFHG and Rear Bushing (car has a rear clunk when picking up speed quickly and slowing down suddenly).
Put a new o-ring on the coolant temp sensor and installed a new OEM front left window regulator (zip tie fix would not have worked as the cable was trashed).

Replaced the rear brake pads, rotors, and pad sensor. Had to resort to pounding a T-45 torx into both rotor retention bolts before they would break loose -- safe to say the previous mechanic didn't believe in anti-seize.

Is it transmission or engine problem?
Greetings. I am new here and also new as a bimmer driver,I'm 25 and from South Africa. I bought a BMW 328i E46 2000 Automatic/steptronic in April 2015 with more than 300000km on the clock and have paid more than it was worth. The problem I have now is an EML dashlight comes on and goes, together with a circle with an exclamation mark on the transmission LCD screen,it is supposed to show "D" but it shows the exclamation and won't rev more than 2rpm...this problem is new, previously it was misfirering and I took it to a guy intown who deals with BMW for fault codes and these are the codes it thrown...
8-Air mass flow sensor
283-Fuel trim bank 2 control limit
282-Fuel trim bank 1 control limit
45-Multifunction steering wheel interface
211-Idle-speed control valve machenical fault
183-Control valve,end pos,fault,enlet camshaft
241-Misfire Cylinder 4
35-ignition cyl 5
10-Signal,Exhaust camshaft sensor
242-Misfire cylinder 6
123-Activation, cooling
And some of the codes are for ABS as the it is also lit.the guy also reset all the codes that were there...on transmission, engine and etc...
So I tried cleaning the Mass Air Flow sensor, failed, got a second hand one, became worse on revs and on power, bought a new one.it was right for 3 days and on the forth day,it couldn't rev more than 2rpm and couldn't ride more than 40km with a new airflow,I returned it back and bought a new one again, from a different shop now,it ran for 4 days and now this problem,it doesn't make any difference when I plug/unplug the sensor.I just did the cylinder head with new valves, timing, new gasket, new thermostat, new water pump, new radiator, new hoses, new airflow, new injectors, new oil,new oil filter and air filter. After this new Airflow sensor,it stopped misfiring and seemed to have gained power,I removed and clean the ICV yesterday as it was jammed using a carb cleaner until yesterday,I was driving it in manual mode, happy with results of nice bmw idling and it started to show that exclamation mark on transmission screen, and this morning it was rough idling and the EML and the exclamation were there,it couldn't rev, tried removing the airflow,no help,it is not moving, tried removing and checking the air hoses,no licks,if I turn off and remove the key from the ignition for few minutes,it comes back alright and show "P" on the transmission screen and no EML light, but if I rev it pass 3,then it starts again and won't drive...I got stuck on a lil-bit steep road close to my house while I was testing it for about 30 minutes and it couldn't climb! Until I tried to start it and then quickly run to manual mode and select gear 1,and it tried to climb, but when I select 2,it dies and stops...had to wait for it again, tried it and drove on gear 1 until I found a flat road, and gear 2 and 3 were selected with no problems...
I'm just out of words now and drained in cash as these are not the only things I did on the car. And I don't have a fault code scanner,I pay R800 for scanning and resetting the codes. I haven't scanned it yet seens I bought new things like airflow and cleaned the ICV and its not misfirering anymore but rough idling, not revving,EML light and Exclamation on the gear screen, even if they are off, once I rev it more than 3rpm,they come back on and it would do anything...
This morning it was worse,no gear shown on the LCD,just the exclamation,as soon as I turn the key to ON(second position),the "P" is replaced by the exlamation mark, tried it many times and also tried different gears, from P,R,N,D,1,2,3,4,5 and there is nothing, won't rev more than 1rpms and won't move an inch,it tries to move only on R but still no revs. The displayed light are: EML,Exclamation on a circle (Limp mode),exclamation on a triangle). I checked for leaks, cleaned the ICV and cleaned the TB but still the car doesn't move, doesn't rev and it idles like its going to die,no changes even if MAF is on or off the plug.
Any help will be appriciated.
Thanks in advance.
