Two-thirds of the way through X you are one-third of your way to Z. I will keep Y out of this, because the time it usually ends up taking is laughable.
    Welcome to the fun!

I am so tired of every e36 looking the same and everyone killing someone who tries something different. Its your car....make it unique.....like me

Just cause I like stock doesn't mean you have to. do it different but do it the right way. Nothing looks worse than a hack job.

Did you say you were going to have some fun with a paint gun?

Yes sir, I picked up a 1.4 HVLP gun from snappy snap on.
I've owned/ran a shop for the last 11 years, full mechanical/performance is my thing. As far as paint goes ...... 0 experience.
What the hell, i'll give it a shot.

paint isnt that hard, its just all about stupid amounts of prep work. the more time you put into prepping the surface properly and taking the time to do things right, the better it will look when you are finished.

I've done exactly ONE paint job. I'm not even a beginner but I'll tell you what I did wrong. It will probably help you more than anything.

You have a shop so you're all set on a decent compressor. Paint guns use more air than just about anything. If your compressor doesn't have a really good dryer on it....get one. I used one of those cheap ones that screw onto the end of the gun. They dont really work that great on a big project. Dont cheap out on the dryer. Water drops are your biggest enemy.

Light....I mean tons and tons of light. Top, sides, back, front....you can't have too much light and you'll be very glad you did. Look at a pic of a paint booth. They have lights from floor to ceiling. Every square inch.

Respirator....I used a good one but you really want a very good one. If you know someone with a full mask....borrow it. Paint is super toxic.

Water based paint.....dont go there. Its new and its great stuff but unless you have the right equipment and training you want to stay away from it. Maybe you know someone who has the training and equpment.

Guns....your 1.4 is a good all purpose gun but you want a really good quality gun for the clear....unless you want to spend days and days sanding off the orange peel. Or maybe you just want a quick paint job and a bit of orange peel doesn't matter. If you want it perfect get another gun for the clear.

Plastic....its tricky to paint with base and clear. Mine wrinkled because I did it wrong. It needs extra prep or paint wont stick. Nothing worse than ruining a sweet new bumper with a poor paint job.

    What i did right.....

Experts....ask as many as you can find. Tell them what you're upto and ask for advice on guns and setup and paint. I used PPG Omni for my epoxy primer, base and clear. Its PPG's economy line. I did the whole car with 2 quarts of base and a gallon of clear. The whole thing including reducers, primer, base, clear, hardeners cost me $400.

Practice....I picked up a couple doors off a junk Ranger. I practiced on those till I was a bit more confident and felt ready to tackle the real thing. Every body shop has a junk pile. Grab some scrap bumpers or fenders and play with those. Painting is practice practice practice. The more you do the better you'll get.

consider single stage paint if you want to...I still like 2 stage base clear but laying on clear like a pro is tough for a beginner. Got any friends who know how? a case of beer will be a small price to pay for a nice smooth coat of clear.

Primer....I used Epoxy primer on the whole car. You don't have to but I did. I wanted a consistant surface to lay my base on. If its not rusty you can use medium sand paper and scuff it up. No primer needed. If the clear is peeling you really want to sand it all off. Your results are only as good as the base you lay the paint onto. peeling clearcoat is not a good base.

    Good luck.

    Thanks FLY,
    Glad you could join us.
Don't mind if we get out of hand, or go OT.
Since this bumper has already been painted I plan on only shooting some primer in the needed areas. Here is what I was recommended for those areas.

Here is a pic of the repaired crack in the bumper.
I laid the flexible repair compound down thick, shaped it using 100 grit, then sanded w/ 600 grit. The crack on the left side is ready for primer/paint.

    Next crack to be addressed

Here is the underside view of the crack. Looks like someone has tried to repair it before and failed.
Ill grind away to get to raw material then lay down the repair compound.

How about pop riveting in thin metal plates to reinforce the cracks? Either that or do a bunch of fiberglass with mesh reinforcement on the back side. Just bondo alone will not permanently fix the crack on a flexible object.

    Screen is used for structure,
A layer of compound then screen then compound.
Its all included in a kit i picked up (bumper repair for dummies)
