Ok, so I have an 01 540i that had the pixels on the cluster all jacked up. I am pretty good with DIY repairs and electronics but I fudged up the needles on my gauge cluster.
So, now I need a new cluster, and after reading pages and pages and more pages of how reprogramming a used cluster is a PITA to get the mileage and the VIN to match (I'm still not even sure if it's possible, some claim it is, and some claim it isn't!).
I came across this thread on e46 fanatics.

Basically the VIN/mileage is burned into the m35080 chip.....so why not just desolder and resolder it on the replacement used cluster?
Why wouldn't this work on e39's? Looks like it worked perfect for that e46'r in the thread I posted.
Thanks
I'm surprised that with all the threads on the subject, I didn't even hear it mentioned. I think I might give it a go.
I did a test with my cluster and bmw scanner 1.4. I Could change the vin and mileage to anything I want (nothing illegal). I'm pretty sure you can code it. Either way bmw scanner is a good investment for $28
Who sells it?
Ed in San Jose '97 540i 6 speed aspensilber over aubergine leather. Build date 3/97. Golden Gate Chapter BMW CCA Nr 62319.
Hmmm... This sounds like an awesome thing to try. My cluster pixels are going as well and I have been searching for the best and most cost efficient way to replace it.
Good suggestions here.
IIRC if you look up the M5 speedo retrofit by someone from bimmer planet, you can change almost everythine via INPA.
