ooh! how much for the billet one?

I'll probably pick one up next month. As far as modding the console, you would only have to cut one set of notches if you didn't plan on moving the holder, correct?

The one-off billet one will cost only slightly more than the plastic one.

Your statement is also correct, if you only plan on installing one, you will only need to modify the console on one spot.

They are selling it for the e36 but I believe it is a e36z part (part number: 51168413622)
That is the piece that came in the 95's and many 96 e36's. I really like it. I preferred it so much that I swapped in that piece from my 96 328I into my 98 m3. The only thing that older style isn't so great with is the giant 32+ ounce cups... plus it's awesome to have that big rear cubby.

Question: is the cup holder able to hold a soda can directly under the arm rest and still allow for the arm rest to be fully down? I think yes, but I want to be 100% sure. May spring for a couple in the very near future

I'll get back to you on that tonight. No sure if I have ever tried it, but I presume so.

Wow, that billet piece is pretty fancy looking, now I want.

Any chance of that being anodized in black of some sort?

    Just in case:

I was kidding on offering the billet piece. That about a 100-hour machine-time job. I guess we could sell a billet piece for about $8,000 each.

Eh, do a group buy. I'm sure you can get it down into the $5500 range.

No problem. Put me on the list, and 7 months later I'll simply stop answering PM's.

Piece mine out of tin, I'll sell it to one of the many "my E36 looks so jdm" enthusiasts that are growing out there. It'll fund the billet one.

But seriously, that's a great alternative since america is home of the "super-size," not just drinking what you NEED.

I never carry drinks in my car unless they're capped anyhow, but I thought all the European cars were to NOT have cupholders, as it took away from the viewing of the motherland, as you passed through the countryside from town to town.

Has anyone bought the one in the original post? Driving the M3 makes it really hard to stay awake during my morning classes because I have no coffee!

    In regards to this one....

This is a little piece of info that not many people know, I have found.

So there are THREE e36 cup holders. The one posted above, which came in OBD1 coupes and sedans, the one with the modular sections that the OP is selling a replacement for, which came in the OBD2 coupes and sedans.

And then the third one, which is the best one. It came on the 318ti and I believe the Z3.

it looks almost identical to the OBD1 cup holder, and uses the same accessory ring to make a taller, skinny hole.... but it's MUCH deeper. It can hold the 32oz cups with the tapered bottoms super snug, and 12oz cans fit in there perfectly without even using the ring to make it taller. WITH the ring it is over half covered.

It doesn't quite fit directly into one of the coupe/sedan consoles, though. And I haven't tried it with the arm rest down (ti's never had arm rests), but it looks like it should fit fine. It just has and angled taper on the front, so that needs to be cut off and then filled in. Not sure on the length... I haven't driven my car regularly in almost a year, so I never had time to finish installing it.

Anyways, here's some pictures comparing the three styles with cans in them. I grabbed a couple from a junkyard when I was there about a year ago.

This all started when my wife got her ti and I was like "why do you get cup holders that WORK?"

    lol.... it's a 14 year old bmw. It's not a ferrari.

I have a friend who has rules about eating or drinking in his car. I get it if it's your "nice" car. But if it's a daily driver, that's what it's for. And I've never seen a mess that I have made that can't be completely cleaned up if you get to it in a timely manner.

    OriginEquipment,

Good idea going after something that bothers the hell out of most E36 M3 owners. What are the dimensions of the new cup holder (diameter and depth)? I'm curious as to whether a large Dunkin Donuts ice coffee or my morning commute covered coffee mug can fit in there...
