Big work being undertaken at the moment due to a small exhaust leak turning into complete manifold to head gasket failure.

So I fetched all the exhaust off to fit new gaskets and generally clean the engine bay up as it's being letting the car down massively. Here's a few pics of the work so far. Including my refresh of the rocker cover which I'm in love with!

Still debating whether to remove the inlet plenum to clean it up or do it in situ to save disturbing the fuel system etc
Loving the rocker/valve cover. What spray paint did you use to get that finish?

Just normal rattle cans, I've done a few other and they've always been fine no issues with heat etc

It looked so nice that I thought you had sent all that out. How did you do the difficult white areas like the logo and the numbers (the air box)?

I polished the aluminium up before painting. Then painted the whole cover. Then ensuring the cover was warm used a Stanley blade to remove the paint from the raised parts. Then lacquered the cover.

I hand painted the raised parts on the air box lid as it's steel and didn't want it going rusty.

Quick clean now it's running again. Pictures of the engine bay will follow when it's light again!

So whilst I'm waiting to be home when it's light to get some engine bay shots I'll keep you entertained with my latest purchase....

BBS STYLE 5 RC009 / RC010 17 x 9 et18 and 17 x 8 et10 from an 840. Nicely refurbed with powder coat silver centre polished lips and gold hardware. Of course first move was to swap out the centre badges for BMW..

They'll probably not go on until next year. But I'm really chuffed to finally have some style 5's and in great sizes!

    Here it is....

Still a few small things to sort and toying with the idea of paying the £75 for a new header tank. But it's a vast improvement. Need to sort the hydroboost system and auto box oil now.

    Thanks mate.

Got my garage ceiling plastered and painted and bright spotlights fitted so the garage is now a great working space just in time for this rubbish time of year!

So far I've changed the gearbox oil and filter, drained the engine oil and drained the hydroboost system. Got the hydroboost reservoir off the car for a clean up and ordered up a new hose that runs down to the pump as it's been leaking for years it would seem.

    Could anyone help?

I've just broke item 7 in this picture. The oil strainer. Bloody thing dropped down inside the reservoir after I'd cleaned it all up got stuck and it's broke when I've tried removing it

I'm in the UK but would gladly pay postage from any other country as the item is NLA

There are a couple of cars being broken on eBay. Maybe worth sending them a message.

Thanks for that. At £41 to my door it's an option but an expensive one at that.

I've got a new lower filter to go in and I'm considering not even fitting the damaged strainer as I can't see it having much of a job to do bar filtering new oil going in which I can just pour through the damaged filter...

I'd agree. That's not worth it. At that point you can keep the old one and use it as you said, or even use any regular strainer as you pour.

Decided to proceed without the strainer and just fill as discussed above. Went for satin black for the reservoir. The cad plate was in too bad a condition to keep it unfortunately.

    And all back in situ

Wiper motor mount and linkage has been cleaned along with lots of other little bits. I really need a new header tank to finish this off now though.

The reservoir actually looks pretty good in black. Nice idea.

Thanks mate. Can't wait to get me replacement header tank on to finish it off. And just for you.

It's D635DFD's 30th birthday this month so treated it to a polish and wax.

Finally got my brand new BMW header tank and fitted it. Really sets the engine bay off. Super happy with how this work has turned out, should keep running strong for a good while now.
