So I picked up an M54’s yesterday for my upcoming e36 M54B30 swap, but I think the seller scammed me and sold me a 2.5L instead of a 3.0L. Are there any concrete ways to tell them apart? It’s got a code “256S5” on it and code “7502900 01” let me know if there’s anywhere else to look. I can’t find the vin on the back of the head. Thanks

You could always pull out the DISA to examine length
Sorry to tell you, but you have been scammed. Its a 2.5 L M54 engine, M54B25.
You have a “256S5”, the 25 at the beginning says that it is a 2.5 L engine. See the full decode in the attached doc.
1999 2.8L Z3 Roadster,
2000 3.0L Z3 Roadster,
There is only one thing more pleasurable than working on a Z3, that's driving it top down on a fine day.
You could look at the...maf...on the 2.5 it's more mini in size compared to the 3.0 .

As above. Put your VIN into realoem and under engine/short motor it will say 306S3 i.e. 3 litre, 6 cylinder. Change that to 2.5 litre and it will come up 256S5 - which is what you appear to have been sold
