Hello,
I am a new member to this forum and have been getting myself educated on the 8 for a future purchase. There are a few 95 840's in my area that I am going to check out. From my initial phone conversations with the current owners they do not know if they have the 4.0 or the 4.4 motor.
From threads in this forum I am under the understanding that during 1995 BMW put both motors in the 8. Assuming this is correct, how can I tell what motor is in the cars. Build date?
Thank you for your help.
If its a US model year 1995, it is a 4.0L M60.
Any 4.4 M62 engines will be in a 1996 car regardless of build date.
Also, the M62s have the Steptronic gear selector with the +/- Manual gate instead of the straight PRND432 one. If you STILL need assurance, just look up the VIN on a decoder site or realOEM.com.

Like you, I too am on the market for a future purchase and leaning towards the V8's vs. V12's... With the 4.4, there seems to be a marginal increase in fuel mileage, which is a factor for me. But now I know, '96 and up is preferred (for me)!
Yes they are us models. Thank you for the clarification. I haven't seen many 96's up for sale when compared to 95's. I assume there were less 96 produced.
That isn't even close. I guess I should not hold my breath for a 4.4. Thanks again.
They're out there, but you just might have to be patient and possibly travel for one depending on where you live.
My M62 '97 has a production date of 02/97.
Mike, is it for sale?
No, but I will look around this area for an M62. Really happy with the engine durability at 215,000 miles. Only thing other than cooling system preventive maintenance has been two cam position sensors, VC gaskets, and recently the valley pan coolant leak.
my 4.0 has 233500 and no issues.
While you're down there ...
Is an M60 from a 5 or 7 series the same (longblock) as the 8 series? In other words, can I look at 540i's and 740i's using the M60 (through 1995 I think) as engine donors?
Sometimes they are so cheap!

Yes thanks, it looks like there was 19 M62 840Ci's made in late 95 MY production.
I have also seen a number of alusil M60 engines for sale that were warranty replacements too.

Would these 19 M62 motor cars in 1995 have been matched up with the steptronic transmission?
The 28 M62 cars would have been.

I think part of the confusion here is Model Year vs. Calender Year production.
It looks like all M62 840Ci cars were sold as 1996 MY cars in North America. So I don't think you will find a 1995 MY M62 840 here unless it was a grey market import.
But the table at http://www.8coupe.com/Production/Year.aspx
is indicating that there was (19) M62 840CiA coupes made in CY 1995 for the North American market.
But worldwide there was a total of 42 M62 840Ci coupes made in 1995, at least that's how the above table reads to me.
It even shows there was 1 Euro LHD M62 840CiA manufactured in 1994. talk about rare!
Enzodog, there is a silver 1997 840CiA for sale here in CA that seems reasonably priced to me, here is the link:

no affiliation, etc.

To the OP (Enzodog): I know that it's the obvious tip, but I'll post it anyway. In my May '96 (production date) car, the engine model number is stamped right on the coolant pipe.
