Hello!
I'm Nick from Germany and I wanted to show you my X5 4.6is with manual 6-speed Getrag S6S gearbox taken from M5 E39 and coupled on to NV125 TC, so the car remains AWD. We had to develope an adapter housing, which was casted from al/si alloy and we also had to manufacture the connecting shaft, to make the RWD-only Getrag able to transfer the torque to the TC. Clutch hydraulics were taken from E39, the shifting mechanism was manufactured using the parts from 3.0 X5 with manual gearbox. The whole conversion took 11 months. In total, only 4 parts were made, everything else was OEM.
Electronics was the easiest task, the most complex one was the adapter shaft from gearbox to TC.
All the functions and all electronics are working as on standard car, no bugs or errors at all.
The car has done about 3000 miles so far with no single issue (thnks God).
The 4.6is's 3.91 final drive ratio seemed to be short, but with the first drive I've got a very different impression.
As manual the car has lost about 50-60 kg (110-120 lbs) of weight, compared to automatic gearbox. Manual causes also less drivetrain losses.
The final gear of manual is just a little bit shorter, than on auto - theoretical top speed with auto at 6500 rpm in 5th were 272 kph (170 mph), while now it would be 265 kph (165 mph) in 6th at 6500 rpm with stock 20 inch wheels.
So the most effect have the 3rd and 4th gear, especially the 4th, which is torque multiplying now, while the 4th gear on auto was straight.
3rd gear on auto is up to 90 mph
3rd gear on manual is up to 82 mph
4th gear on auto - 136 mph
4th gear on manual - 111 mph
5th gear on manual is as the 4th gear on auto.
So according to this, the stock car has no chances against the manual ecpecially after shifting in to the 4th gear.
Yet the 0-60 time must be worse than stock, due to 2 shifts needed, the overall impression of acceleration is great.
You may have heard about this car from other forums.
I can't submit any urls now, but you can find the car on youtube by tipping 4.6is 6-speed manual - there's for sure only one as far as I know.
Reagrds,
Nick
Here's the older pic with suitable shift knob. Now it's OEM 6-speed.
Can't wait to see some pictures here!
Wish they made these like this at the factory. I would buy one in a heartbeat!

Hey Bstormer! How’s that X5 conversion running? I’m thinking of grabbing a Getrag 420 and doing the same thing. Do you have any pics of the install? Pics of custom parts?
Just bumped a 5 year old thread?
