    e36 1.8l dohc all-motor hp?

im looking to buy a e36 bmw very soon. im leaning toward the 1.8l because of insurance costs since im only 17. right now i have a jetta vr6 which pulls pretty strong. i know the 1.8l wont do that, but how hard is it to get some good hp #s out of it without going fi? to me 140hp sounds miserably slow....just trying to find a way to work around that

atleast it probably wont break as much as the jetta (the things ive heard about those cars) If your worried about insurance money on a i6 over a 4 banger then i doubt youll be wanting/having the money to make it very fast- no offense.

There isn't very much room to grow in the 1.8L, as far as I know. It just doesn't seem worth it.

Not so well. To get worthwhile gains, you'll need to do FI. Either the DASC or the Mosselman turbo. I don't recall seeing a dyno, but I don't think intake + exhaust + chip yeilds anything worth bragging about. There are a bunch of threads on this, try using the search feature. Hope it helps. They are peppy little cars with great handling, but are by no means fast.

There are a few people on here with the Downing/Atlanta Superchargers, the member Coleco is one of them. I think they go for a little bit over 3 grand, and apparently they wield over 200 bhp, which isn’t too bad of a gain for the m42. Here's the webpage:

I disagree. We get an estimated 368bhp at the engine and a definate 258rwhp with the 1.9L M44 engine. It ran in 4th gear on a Dyno Dynamics machine. The car just wheel spins in 3rd gear dyno on heavy rims with 255 rear tires

FI is the only REAL way of obtaining more power.

I have a 96 318i and it is by no means fast. On the other hand i have modded it to be a little quicker and it handles awesome!!! Im 18 and it's great for insurance, gas, and driving around. I went to a track last weekend and was easily killing the 325's, 330's, and some stock M's in the corners and then they would pull on me some in the straights.

how expensive is it to build a custom turbo setup? me and a friend set one up on his prelude for around $1500 and it ran about 8psi...is the cost similar on these cars?
