So I've got ahold of inpa. scanned my car. Talks to all modules but not to body/ews3, nor engine/dme/ews3 sync start. Give me error cannot connect to control unit. Does that mean I need new ews unit? I'm lost has brand new battery, checked all fuses(engine, trunk, under carpet) all good non blown. Jumped started, work fine. Activated fuel pump with inpa. Where can I order a new ews unit? Online or dealer only? Any help is much appreciated.
Hi BigBoy38,
I had same problem a few days ago, starter relay was faulty.
Check that first!
You scanned with inpa? And it could not connect to the ews? Where is this starter relay? Under dme green relay? Just talked to dealer bout ordering a new ews3.3 interface. They told me that ews 3.3 has been discontinued and that I would have to upgrade to ews 4.3.
Estimated at $162 for ews unit and $300 installed so around $450 out the door.
No, I scanned with PA Soft. Best in range!!!
Starter relay is salmon colour inside e-box.
Don't hassle with new EWS unit, first check all electrics e.g. relay, starter motor and ignition switch... IMHO
Ima look at it now. but doesnt it differ based on models? Starter works.
first one?

Yes, you are right they are differ based on models.
There is both versions:
Not sure how long you have had the car, did the problem just start?
Have you had your key apart recently? Is it the original key, etc...
Clusters not original.. I broke mine trying to fix it.
I've had it since 4/20/2012. Original key. Yes I opened it to replace battery. I did not lose the transponder chip inside.
I scanned my friends e39 with inpa. I successfully connected to all the modules including ews 3. From the dme/ews3sync start and from body/ews3module. Think my ews if fried? Since it gives me cannot connect to control unit.

hi need some help here my 99 740i (11/98) wont start , check and align the EWS, and DME (handshake), after that my next step was gt the stater relay, but cant find it anywhere. call dealer but they "dont know" where is located.
i look under DME module and just have 3 relays
1- BROWN large
2- PINK SALMON (small)
3- GREEN (small)
under glove comparment got 4 relays
1-BLACK (large)
2-BROWN (small)
3-BROWN (small)
4-BLACK (extra small)
please anybody ?
1999 bmw 740i (11/98) manufacturer date
It's the salmon colored relay under the DME. If your battery is good and the key/ews is in sync, it should click when you turn the key to the start position. Do you have more than one key? Is the gear position showing up on the cluster?
